Two Dishes and Two Receivers

Hello,

I'm a new user and I have a few simple questions....

I have an DMT1000 receiver, two dishes, and a DiSEqC 2-way multi-switch that I bought about some four years back. I've been using only one dish pointing to TelStar5.

I've recently moved to a new home and I would like to hook up the TV in the master bedroom besides the one in the living room. That means I will need another receiver. I also want to use the second dish looking at another bird in the sky. With the help of the DiSeqC 2-way multi-switch and a splitter to share the output with both receivers, will I be able to use both receivers and dishes indepently? Will I loose quality or signal if both receivers are using the same dish at the same time?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Quang

Re: Two Dishes and Two Receivers

Quang,
The diseqc 2x1 switch will not help you to make 2 receivers working independently.
Here is what you can do:
1. Upgrade the lnbf on both dishes to dual
2. Buy one more Diseqc 2x1 or 4x1 for the second receiver.
3. First receiver hooked up to the diseqc switch which connected to both dishes.
4. Second receiver hooked up to the seconde diseqc switch which connected to both dish.
Setting up that way, both receiver will work independently.
Good luck

dtsexpert,

Thanks for your reponse.

Any dual lnbf would work? Are there particular brands you recommend?

I live in central California. One dish will be pointing to TelStar5 and I'll keep it that way. I'm not sure which bird I'm going to point the other dish to. I'd like some educational and movie channels. Which bird would you recommend for my location and preference?

For my second receiver, I would like to have something a bit fancy in terms of features in comparison to the DMT1000 model I have. I want to be able to update the firmware, has AC3 audio, and what-not. Which one would you recommend?

Thanks,
Quang

Yes, any dual ku standard lnbf will work. I have used different brands and don't see any differences. If you want good deal, check out ebay. I got 2 DishNet standard ku lnbf, 10/each.

Some PBS channels on AMC3, few local channels on G10R. For the PBS, you need a receiver which output AC3 such as Fortec Lifetime.

I would recommend the Fortec Lifetime, AC3 audio, fast, and user-friendly.

Michael
PS: If you buy a Diseqc switch, get a 4x1. It's a little bit more expensive than the 2x1, but it'll be more flexibility in future if you plan to put up more dishes.

Michael,

It turns out the DiSEqC switch I have is a 4x1, which is not even open yet. I'll get another just like that in case I need to install more dishes. I have a feeling my neighbors might not like the look of more than 1 dish hanging on the side of my house. But I think I might be okay with just two.

I suppose with the AC3 output coming from the DVB receiver, I also need some kind of decoder that takes the AC3 signal as the input, right? I have a five-year old Pineer stereo system with some 5 components, but I doubt it has an AC3 decoder. Eventually, I need to get a different big screen HDTV with AC3/Dolby Digital 5.1 input so I don't have to turn on the stereo system everytime I watch TV with AC3. I have a five-year old Mitsubishi 45" projection TV, and I also doubt it has AC3 input. If I get the FORTEC Star Lifetime or 5900 unit, is there a way that I can make the sound output to my Mitsubishi TV without spending a lot more money?

Thanks,
Quang

Yes, you need a AC3 external decoder to decode the AC3 stream. Some "cheap" A/V "cheap" receivers are able to decode AC3. Shop arround, you might get one for less than $150.
Or wait until you get your big screen HDTV. If you are intersted in getting more satellite, get a h-h mount which can be used to move the dish. Once you set it up correctly, you will see all the viewable sats in your location.
Living in N.California, you can see PAS9@58W to Echostar 1/2@148W.
Are you watching VTV4 every night. VTV4 is the best present I have ever had for my parents...:-)
