Most people move from FTA receiver to DVB..it's just a natural transition since it's much easier to learn about FTA using an STB as opposed to DVB. Get yourself a cheap fta receiver you won't regret it.
Also, try using MyTheatre as a software. It's the easiest and most reliable.

First, the way I understand the definitions, DVB and FTA pretty much mean the same thing to us users. DVB is a generic format that the FTA signals are transmitted in. I think the only choices you have is a set top box, which I think the STB refers to, or a PCI card like the
Twinhan 1020a or Broadlogic, etc, or in this case a USB card like the StarBox. But the STBs, PCIs and USB receivers all receive DVB FTA.
That being said, to some extent I agree with the statement that using a set top box might be a bit simpler at times, mainly because they are a bit more sensitive, and the power supplies to run the LNBs, switches and motors are a bit more powerful. Personally, I have 2 set top boxes, 2 PCI cards, and just got a Starbox for XMAS. It is a bit easier to find satellites with the STB only because the signal/quality meter updates more frequently, but that depends on what software you use for the PCI or USB receivers.
So far, I haven't been very happy with my Starbox. It is very insensitive compared to my other receivers. However, I'm somewhat looking forward to using it to help me aim my dish, because since I can use it with my laptop, I can use it out at the dish to get immediate results. Unfortunately, if you've slaved or daisy-chained the Starbox off other receivers, and/or have a weak signal to begin with, the Starbox may make reception difficult except on strong signals.
It is unfortunate that TSREADER or DVBAPPS don't seem to work with the Starbox, because they would make it's use much more user friendly. I have tried ProgDVB, and that does work, and it has a nice signal meter, but the software isn't particularly user friendly. Nice to hear that MyTHeatre works. I have never used that.
One annoying thing about the StarBox is that if you unplug the USB plug and plug something else in for a while, then try to return to using the Starbox, you have to re-install the software, and even reboot your computer, so I've had to get a USB hub so I can have one port dedicated to the Starbox.
