Newbie LNBF question

Is there any benefit to using a univeral LNBF when compared to a standard LNBF? Whats the real difference between them? Thx.

Andrew

The only difference that I can see is the different local oscillator frequencies; but there might be some more differences between the two; I use standard LNBs exclusively and have never had a problem with these types of LNB.

Some of the Atlantic birds require a Universal LNBF. If you live on the EAST coast, and you plan or have a motorized system, you should buy a Universal LNBF.

For example, PAS 9 satellite (http://www.lyngsat.com/pas9.shtml) has a few FTA channels that are on frequencies less than 11700 mhz. Heck for the $6 bucks difference why not. That way you will be ready anytime.

How can you tell what type of LNB it is.

I just installed a Fortec Star FTA Sat. and after 2 days with trial and error, I finally got my system worked. There are 3 or 4 different types in the LNB menu and it only works for one but not the other. Once you chose the correct one, "green" signal picked up just like that. My question is. How do you know what type of LNB you have (Universial, Single, Single - S).

I am talking about FTP Sat. (Telstar5).

thanks

Your answer is on page 9 of the manual. But here it is again:

LNB TYPE AND LOCAL OSCILLATOR (LO) SETTINGS

• Universal --- Low 9750, High 10600, and 22KHz tone selection is automatic. Covers freq from 10.7GHz - 12.75GHz Mostly used on small KU-band offset dishes.

• Single -------- 10750, 22KHz tone can be set on or off.
Covers freq from 11.7GHz - 12.2GHz

• Single – S --- 5150, 22KHz tone can be set on or off.
For C-Band Covers freq from 3.4GHz - 4.2GHz

• Wide --------- Low 9750, High 10750, 22KHz tone can be set on or off.
Covers freq from 10.7GHz - 12.75GHz Mostly used on big dishes in conjunction with a feedhorn.

You can change the LO figure for any of these settings to suit your LNB. The LNB label should have the freq range and LO freq. That will tell you what setup to use.
