COMPASS & AZIMUTH TRUE SOUTH

I TAKE IT A COMPASS (MAGNETIC) IS TRUE SOUTH WHEN IT IS POINT TRUE SOUTH?
THERE IS NO + OR - FOR IT BUT WHEN YOU ARE USING A GEOGRAPHIC NUMBER LIKE AZIMUTH, THEN THE + OR - FOR GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION HAS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE FORMULA.

EX: TRUE SOUTH WITH A COMPASS IS 180° (MAGNETIC)
TRUE SOUTH WITH A GEOGRAPHIC SETTING IS 180 + OR -
THE LOCATION YOUR IN.
DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO ANYONE. CURRENTLY I HAVE TO BUY ANOTHER COMPASS IN THE MORNING, I THINK MINE IS ACTING UP.
THANKS
ARTHUR

You got it mixed up. The compass does not show you the TRUE Geographic reading. That is why you have the magnetic deviation charts to compensate for your area.

For example: In Columbus, OH TRUE SOUTH is 184 degrees. So when you look at the compass, you should point to 184 NOT 180.

TRUE SOUTH Values:

184 Magnetic = 180 Geographic (for Columbus, OH)
166 Magnetic = 180 Geographic (for San Diego, CA)
194 Magnetic = 180 Geographic (for NY, NY)

Re: Compass true South.

Thanks for the info. Got that straight now. Went and bought a new compass this a.m., tried a perfect aim and finally set up for T5 after wards, but have signal of 65% in the RED, so I have some adjusting to do. Will have to wait to tuesday to go up there with the receiver and tv. I have a 5" b/w tv, but think I need to use a color one, so I'm trying to borrow a small one to take up there, also have a meter that I will use. I guess it PATIENCE from here. thanks for the info.

Make sure you are also using a LIVE transponder (TP) to check for signal and quality.

For example for Telstar 5
Go to TP DATA and change from TP1(used for C-Band) to TP25 (Used for KU band)

UP & RUNNING! (finally)

Finally got a signal about 92 and quality about 87 after two hours of moving the positioner by hand back and forth. The new compass helped and the keyword here as I have read before SMALL STEPS in movements. Had to adjust the elevation more than normal, will still have to make better adjustments for tracking all satellites, just started to rain so I take what I can for now T5! Sure felt good to see that meter light up!. Thanks for the info and inputs, I will be glad to assist also as time goes on.
