adding switches

ok i have a 4x1 diseqc switch, but i don't know which idea is better... placing the switch near the dish or the receiver?

If you put it near the receiver, then you'll need to run separate lines for each of the LNB's out to those LNBS.

If you put it near the dish, then you only need to run 1 cable back to the receiver.

Most folks do option 2 to cut back on the number of cable runs out towards the dish....

no they are made to be outside.

The one I have came with a plastic sleeve it fits into.
It doesn't make it waterproof, but does keep the major rain off it (sort of like an umbrella...)

The switches are made to be outside but you must be careful with the connectors you use. Try to use the ones with a rubber O-ring and silicone -- these are good for external use. Better still are the compression type like Snap 'n Seal by Gilbert or Thomas & Betts. Also, when you run the cables make sure that they don't allow water to run down them directly onto the conectors and switch; form a little drip-loop if possible.
