Okay to recap:
You will get very limited FTA programming with this set up. You need to replace the LNBF with a universal(such as those for sale here at sadoun). Second the Freq you are using is incorrect for that LNBF if memory serves it is 11.7 to 12.2 higher end of the band. Next look throught the Lyngsat Sat directory for available satellites in the arc you can see find one that has the programming that most appeals and park it there for a while.
Yes you can use that LNB but your options are very limited and the dish is fine. spend 35$ and get a universal LNB and 10$ on a mounting bracket. This will give you a huge host of programming. Also point your dish at say Intelsat 5(telstar 5)
http://www.lyngsat.com/ia5.html this will give you the best idea if your current LNB will pick up anything and give you a chance to tweak your system before you go hunting for a new sat to watch.
Also use your friends Sat finder, using the computer itself to start off with is a difficult proposition, take this as the word of experience. Also make sure you have a good compass with you so you can double check where you are pointed at. Make sure your dish mount is true and level.
As to the software it should be fine to start with and actually may be good for a while there are programs like Progdvb which you might look into once you establish a working basline system.
