Transponder questions

Can someone explain transponders a little bit more. I keep hearing that term but am curious what relevency it has in the whole picture. Just trying to get the whole picture.

What is a live transponder for my hot south amc5?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks tec 8)

The simplest way to understand what is meant by a term a live transponder is a frequency/symbol rate combination on that satellite that is broadcasting 24/7.

If you go to http://www.lyngsat.com/amc5.html and look for a frequency that is broadcasting DVB signal and is marked as F (free), there is a pretty good chance that it is a live transponer (uing the term loosely).

So in your case 11742 V (Utah Education Network mux) and 12182 H (NYN mux) are your best bets.

More correct definition of transponder woud be a TRANSmitter/resPONDER and it is part of a satellite (mutlipe transponders per satellite) which is able to recive signal sent by the broadcaster on one frequency and send it out to the user on another.

Another way to think of transponders is frequencies on the FM dial.
92.9 might be a usable frequency, but if there is nobody transmitting there you cant get any reception. Same with these transponders. There are transponders that are shared and are only active when in use.

One other thing, is some transponders are stronger than others. When someone suggests a transponder frequency, they typically mention a strong one so it's easier to get a signal indication.

On some satellites, I get 75 percent reading on a few transponders. Some only get 30, maybe 20 percent. Obviously those would be a crummy candidate to line up with.

Thanx guys!

I think I unserstand now. Is there one that i should look for when searching for sat signal. In other words, when I choose amc 5 and go to the properties of that sat and go to tp, do i select a specific one there from the limited list? If so which would be the better one the higher number (meaning the highest dtrength) or select a mid range strength?

Thanks again guys for all your help! And I do mean it im not just saying it.

yes, and which one to select comes from recommendations from the folks here. The selection that's given are some that may or may not be on, or not the strongest ones. You really need to ask someone with some experience, that is famaliar with the available channels that are on all the time and are strong candidates for lining up your sat dish.

Lots of folks here can recommend good ones for a particular sat. Just ask.
For AMC 5, 12182 (NY Net and OTB channels) and Empire 11808 are pretty good transponders.
