trying to see Telstar 5

I have a BEC-2000 which I ordered from Sadoun. I also got an ADTH (Atlanta DTH) 30" dish and Ku-LNBF from a friend at work who used it to watch CCTV4 (on AMC4 I think).

I've been trying all day to find Telstar 5 with no luck. My first question is, will this dish and LNBF work?

I have the LNBF programmed on the receiver as Ku-band with Fixed dish, and L.O. set to 10750.

One other issue with the LNBF is that it doesn't have angle markings. It just has one line marked "UP". I'm not sure how to align it to 0, so that I can set the correct polarization tilt.

If I have the correct azimuth and elevation, but not the right polarization tilt, I'm assuming I still won't see the satellite, right?

I've added the magnetic deviation to the azimuth as well.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Yes, your 30" dish will work; the LNB should too if it was working on AMC4.

You could try L.O. setting of 10,600 in case the LNB you have is universal; if you're sure its a standard LNB then 10,750 is the correct setting.

The "UP" marking is referenced to 12 o'clock; so if, for example, your location calls for a positve polarization tilt value; then you would rotate the LNB counterclockwise.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got it to work this afternoon.

One more question, though. I have the dish attached to a 5' mast mounted on a vent pipe on the roof. Do I still need to ground the dish?

Yes, I would still ground it. The vent pipe is not sufficient to provide good (if any) grounding.

L.O. setting is 10,600 MHz for a universal LNB. I guess by now you have found the signal... :?
