need your help to get a signal

on my tv screen for signal which transponder should i use?also how can i tell if my lnb is bad or not working?i am installing a directv satelite system for a friend and cannot get a signal.need your expert information.

Know the direction (Azimuth and Elevation) for the dish. Once you point it in that direction, make sure that are no obstacles in front of the dish. Adjust you dish slowly until you see the signal registers on your screen.
