Super Buddy meter is compatible with the DIRECTV SWM-5 and SWM-8

The Super Buddy meter is compatible with the DIRECTV SWM-5 and SWM-8 modules that are used in DIRECTV MFH-2 hi-rise/multi-dwelling unit installations, and is compatible with the new DIRECTV SWM-ODU (SWM integrated into the LNB on the antenna that looks just like the Slimline).

Just FYI – We will start shipping a revised version of the Super Buddy that comes standard with a USB PC connection (instead of the previous 9 pin serial) and has a higher current limit level of 750 mA (the previous current limit level now was 625 mA). Our next shipment of meters will include these revisions.

We’re also just beginning to offer, as a $20 List Price option, a built-in 21V module to power the new DIRECTV SWM-ODU from the meter before the installer ever runs the cords for the power inserter.

For the old Super Buddy meters out there now, we offer an accessory called the SWiM Kick 21 for List Price $79 that screws on the top of the Super Buddy to allow the tech to power the DIRECTV SWM-ODU from the meter.

DIRECTV SWM-ODU notes
DIRECTV has indicated that the new DIRECTV SWM-ODU requires 21 Volts to power it.

Option 1: Power the SWM-ODU with the power inserter
With many satellite meters on the market, the installer must use the power inserter to power the LNB and then a splitter leading to the meter to read the signal from the SWM-ODU.

a.) For basic peaking meters (i.e. Sat Buddy, Sat Buddy 2, or Dual Buddy), an ASL (Alignment Signal Locator) is required to be used during the peaking process to ensure that the 101° and 119° satellites are located and peaked for maximum signal strength. The SWM integrated LNB is connected to the ASL (SWM IN port). This connection then allows the 101° and 119° satellite locations to be split into separate unique signals as seen below.

b.) According to DIRECTV, if an ASL is not available then a single port power passing two way splitter (rated @ 2MHz - 2150MHz) can ONLY be used with the BirDog and Super Buddy meters.

Note: The SWM Integrated LNB output port must be connected to the input port of the Splitter

Option 2: Power the SWM-ODU from the satellite meter before ever running the power inserter cables
The normal Super Buddy meter has a maximum voltage output of 18V, so we have come up with two solutions to make the tech’s job faster and easier:

1) For existing Super Buddy meter owners, they can purchase the accessory model SWiM Kick 21 that attaches between the top of the Super Buddy meter and the SWM LNB and up-converts the voltage from 18V to 21V.

2) For people purchasing new Super Buddy units (that will ship November 5th, 2008) , they can choose to add an option at the time of order for a built-in 21V module. To ensure this option is installed during production, the customer should order Part Number Super Buddy 21.
