need help, not at all well versed in this

i have an old dish that i bought from a satellite company i used to pay a monthly fee to but do not use their services any longer. it is still attached to my roof and they told me it was mine to keep that i had paid for it. i don't have any receiver box for it thinking it would not work unless i subscribed again to their services. i am homebound and not able to afford cable or satellite tv any longer and would like to use a converter box to pick up over the air tv. can i purchase some kind of reciever that would allow me to use this satellite that is still on my roof and attach it to the converter box to my non-digital tv? if so, what would i need to purchase if this would work?

It would help to answer your q? if you specify what size of dish, or what was the sat. company services you used. If it's Dish Network 18" dish, it will not give you many channels. If it's 30" dish and is oriented to sat with many free channels, you can buy fta receiver and watch whatever is there.
