S95 and universal lnbs

Hi from down under,

Does the simple s95 handle universal lnb's? Brochure says yes but .....

ie does it pass/manage the universal lnb 22kHz hi/lo band switching tone 100%? If my stb is tuning a hi band freq (22Khz on) will the s95 detect correctly?

I use this simple finder in conjunction with an stb and portable tv for final alignment/sat identification.

Yes, it does:
  • 950-2050 MHz bandwidth
.............
  • Works with STANDARD, UNIVERSAL, and DSS LNBFs. (Note: Some other competitor brands do not work with UNIVERSAL LNBFs)
  • 13-18VDC
The above are the specs from Sadoun's web site.
But problem is, the signal from satellite should be somewhat strong. From DSS satellites, it's strong, from others - some report success, but I got more luck with a compass

I used my ultra receiver and small tv works great as a signal meter and sat identifier.

Tks gents for the quick replies,

I have no doubt it will work like a gem on a universal lnb tuning low band (22kHz off).

Can you please confirm that it works (in cct) whilst tuning a universal lnb high band frequency (22Khz on).

OK, got the CRO out and had a look at what is happening and why it won't work for me.

The S95 does not pass the 22KHz switching tone from stb to lnb when tuning hi-band on a universal lnb.

Therefore the universal lnb will not be able to select hi-band frequencies while the meter is in line.

So I'm not sure that those spec sheets are telling it like it really is, unless I have an older model?

Note: The 22Khz tone universal band switching tone is about a 1 volt ripple imposed on the DC V/H supply.

Can someone please check and confirm.

Just out of curiosity, I connected my oscilloscope between one of my receivers and an lnbf on a fixed dish, but used the receiver to send 22KHz Universal lnb type signals, as well as the DISEQC east/west motor commands, ( even though there was no motor there to receive them). I was able to see these on either side of the SF95 signal meter. My scope isn't calibrated in any way, but I was seeing about 0.7 or 0.8 volts whether on the receiver side or the LNB side of the meter. Of course, my tests were done in the house, some 250' away from the dish, so there may have been a different reading if I had done the tests out at the dish near the lnb.

Anyway, I'm not sure what I am doing differently. It makes me wonder if there are different versions of these meters? I've seen different pictures of these meters on the webs, which are all relatively the same shape and size, but look slightly different relative to the appearance of the plastic, ie smooth vs rough surface. I'm using the meter purchased from Sadoun, and looks like those pictured on the Sadoun web page.

Yes there are. If you buy the SF95 meter from us, it will pass the 22KHz tone to the LNBF. Other brands (with the same model number) do not pass the 22KHz tone switch.

Thanks gents. It appears that not all Sadoun S95's were created equal.

The attached spec sheet shows the model I have. It's a few years old. I guess this one doesn't support 22khz?

Much appreciate all the input and effort here.

Tks 'Sadoun'. Perhaps the Sadoun S95 spec sheet should indicate the transparency to 22kHz that the current model affords.

Looks like I'll have to upgrade.

PS Mine was made in Taiwan and not China.
