channel master 1007IFD

Hello all,
I've got Starband Nova satellite internet, & I need to re-aim my antenna.
I bought a Channel Master 1007IFD signal meter & haven,t figured out how to use it correctly! The instructions seem kinda vague to me...
Heres how I tried- Connected the meter to the dish LNB, turned on signal meter, selected 18v/ level/ & tone switch.
I don't know what setting to use for the gain knob, so I set it mid position.
As I rotated the dish the analog dial indication would increase, I got it to where it seemed to peak & than secured the antenna & reconnected my modem.
Made no difference at all- still no signal on my modem. When my system was working well I had put marks on the dish mast to indicate where it was aimed when working, so I don't think I'm too far off.
Any advice on how to properly use the signal meter would be great!
One other thing- I noticed when I put my hand between the feedhorn & the dish, the meter indication would jump up... I would think that would block the signal to decrease the indicated signal???
Thanks for any help!

I don't see anything obviously wrong about how you're using it, although I don't know anything about the LNBF in that system, so I don't know what is required in terms of 22khz or diseqc, etc. Is that a two way system, ie do you transmit too? If so, I'd suggest getting a professional. If it's just receive, and you transmit over land lines, then you shoule be able to do it.
The thing about blocking the signal is strange {unless that thing is transmiting}. I have one of those meters, and really like it, however I've noticed that it does really strange things if the battery isn't charged up.

One thing that isn't obvious about the meter, but it sounds like you figured it out, is that you don't really turn it on.... you either supply power via the meter, in which case you don't connect to the receiver, or you can turn the meter power off, and connect the receiver, and the meter and lnbf will be powered by the receiver. I don't know how you'd use the meter with a system that transmits, so I'm hoping that your system is a receive only.

Do you know what sat you're trying to aim at?

First off, thanks for the reply!
It is a 2 way system being satellite internet, my system transmits & recieves on the dish.
The IA-7 or Telstar 7 satellite is the one I'm trying to aim to, I'm pretty far north in Alaska, & understand that there are very few options this far north. Also no pro installers left up here so I'm pretty much on my own!
Also at my location, no phone lines, so this is my primary & only comm.
