Thumbs up LyngBox Launch on Friday

http://gustaf.rr.nu/LyngBox/index.html

I hope Sadoun plans on stocking the LyngBox. It supports HD satellite reception, is a DVR, and updates itself directly from LyngSat over the Internet!

LyngBox

This receiver looks almost too good to be true. There is no indication what the price will be, but if anyone at SADOUN is going to the IBC show in Amsterdam they might tell us.

New Satellite Receiver Stores 50,000 Channels; Can Be Used Worldwide

Rocco Fanucci – Wed, 2006 – 09 – 06 15:34
Most “satellite people” are very familiar with the Lyngsat Web site. It could very well be the world’s most complete database of accurate satellite ladder charts. Pick a satellite and you can view all the channels available for viewing. For example, the AMC-4 satellite carries a number faith-based and international channels in North America. On another site, LyngSat Address, select a country and you can find out which satellites their channels are using for broadcasting – in their home market and internationally. TV Prima Romania, for instance, is using several satellites over Europe, Asia and the Atlantic.
Get ready for the LyngBox.

We were tipped off by a Polish Web site in February about a new project involving LyngSat for a “super receiver” based on the DVB-S2 standard, but also capable of receiving DVB-T and decoding HDTV:

The Swedish National Space Board found it interesting as well:
Lyngbox är ett av de företag som för första gången 2005 genomför projekt med Rymdstyrelsens stöd. Lyngbox utvecklar ett intressant koncept för att via en databas på Internet automatiskt ställa in kanalerna på satellit-TV-mottagare, oberoende av var I världen man befinner sig.

More than a little intrigued, we looked it up and found it: a European Space Agency (ESA) project, for a telecom application called “LyngBox.” They set out to build a satellite receiver last July that would be able to continuously update itself from data published on the Internet. Brilliant. The ESA and Hollycroft Associates got together with LyngSat to develop this new “super satcom box” and got into the development work last December. Could they be using some of the new chips introduced at CES? According to the Swedish patent filing (see PDF, page 26) from earlier this year, this receiver can do it all.

With the patent issued, Lyngbox is set to debut at the IBC show in Amsterdam on Friday, 8 September 2006. Along with a 160-gig drive, it has all the features you’d expect:
Features:
> Can store up to 50,000 channels
> Free access to all LyngSat Network services (LyngSat, LyngSat Guide and LyngSat Maps) with exclusivity to the LyngBox. No other receiver has access to these services
> Always corrects channel names, not relying on service names in the DVB stream
> Family user profiles and parental lock. Each user can have their own selection of channels based on countries, languages and genres which will be updated automatically
> HDTV support (720p and 1080i)
> Supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and MPEG-2
> Built-in tuners for both satellite TV (DVB-S/DVB-S2) and terrestrial TV (DVB-T)
> Internal slot system which makes it possible to install an additional tuner card
> 4:3 and 16:9 TV screen format support
> Teletext decoding
> Dual Common Interface slots for use with pay-TV channels
> PVR functionality with hard disk
> Possibilities to store recordings on an external DVD recorder connected with USB2
> DiSEqC 1.2 support for controlling LNB and motorised dish
> Remote control as standard and a wireless remote keyboard as accessories
> Channel selection by typing the name of the channel on the keyboard
> View images from a digital camera connected to the LyngBox
Interfaces:
> DVB-S2 input
> DVB-T input + output (pass-through)
> Expansion slot for additional tuner card
> 2 Common Interface slots
> HDMI-output.
> Component output
> Composite output
> SCART output (RGB and composite)
> S/PDIF optical output with AC-3 support
> Stereo audio (2 RCA)
> 4 USB 2.0 ports
> Ethernet connection (100BaseT)

It sounds great as long as the price isn't outrageous.

LyngBox

Has anyone else seen advertising for the new Lyngbox. It appears to be marketed by Lyngsat, but the new box combines DVB-S2 with DVB-T and a Hard Drive. You can watch Standard DVB and HDTV! So one could watch local digital television AND FTA Satellite on the same device. You could even record. My only question is this: While this is great for the Euro Market--Will it work in the North America Market? Does Europe use the same DVB-T system as North America?

I have merged two new threads about LyngBox nto the existing thread. It's easier to keep it all in one spot.

Of course DVB-T standard is not used in the US, so all it would be good for is satellite for people in the US.
I think I'd wait to see if they provide an ATSC card for it, unless the price is very low.

I agree with you. Right now the USA does not support DVB-T (I wish we did ). ATSC is the USA standard and we seems to be stuck with it.

Also, I am not sure we can use DBS-S2 yet here for consumer FTA channels.

DVB-s & DVB-S2 Apparently USA Compatable?

Since this STB says"> Built-in tuners for both satellite TV (DVB-S/DVB-S2) and terrestrial TV (DVB-T) "; here's what I found:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DVB-S is the original Digital Video Broadcasting forward error coding and modulation standard for satellite television and dates from 1995. It is used via satellites serving every continent of the world. DVB-S is used in both MCPC and SCPC modes for broadcast network feeds, as well as for direct broadcast satellite services like Sky TV (UK) via Astra in Europe, Dish Network in the U.S., and Bell ExpressVu in Canada. The transport stream delivered by DVB-S is mandated as MPEG-2.
[edit]

DVB-S2

One of the first DVB-S2 tuner cards.

DVB-S2 is an improved and updated specification to replace the DVB-S standard, ratified by ETSI in March 2005. Today the main use for this new standard is the distribution of HDTV, while the original standard was mainly applied to SDTV services. The development of DVB-S2 coincided with the introduction of HDTV and H.264 (MPEG-4) video codecs.
The authors claim that the DVB-S2 performance gain over DVB-S is around 30%, when the addition of improvements in the video compression are added, a (MPEG-4) HDTV service can now be delivered in the same capacity that supported an early DVB-S-MPEG-2 SDTV service, only a decade before.

Its going to cost an arm & a leg $$$

I think after looking a little closer, this receiver is not going to be under $200 like most of the sat receivers available today. It has two tuners and a 160Gb harddrive.

Besides that it has a HDMI output and with the hard drive isn't there some propriatary issue about recording through a HDMI output or something? My TV has the HDMI output, but none of my other cheap electronic equipment does.

As I said above, it seems a waste for anyone in the US to buy a receiver that is aimed at the European market.

However, there is a chance that this is just a computer, and the spare slot for an additional tuner, might accept a generic ATSC tuner, such as an Air2PC or Twinhan, or similar card. Although to do so, I assume that the receiver would have to be upgraded with drivers for any add-on card. If, however, they do allow use of generic tuner cards, then despite the likely high cost, this could well be a powerful box. However until we see just what it can do, I sure wouldn't invest in one.
I have this hope, that the software for this thing will also be open archetecture, so that programmers can write plugins, etc, but that is probably just wishful thinking. Definately something to watch though, particularly after they get their forums going. Ie their web page, http://www.lyngbox.com/ has a button for forums, but it doesn't work yet. Once the forum thing starts to function, I think we'll be able to see what it is capable of.
