Hi I am new to this stuff... I just recently bought a sm3d12

And i dont seem to get any quality. I have a fortec star 76cm dish and a lifetime ultra receiver. I guess i have installed the motor correctly, the true south i guess is set, and i have the right elevation set on the motor, but I dont realy know the elevation on my dish .... if any of you guys can help me it will be appriciated, my magnetic decl. is -4.54 and the elevation on the motor is 27 , which is also my latitude. I live in sarasota fl my zip is 34235. I realy dont know how to calculate the dish elevation , i get confused since english is my 2nd tongue language. If you guys could give me some tips it will be appriciated.

Thanks

hello! First, read these directions I have wrote. If you still can't seem to get the signal/quality then I might be able to help you because I live in Tampa... for a fee of course :mozilla_wink:

As you probably know, you must have a good view of the sky at least for the satellites you want to view.

First, the elevation of your dish needs to be adjusted to about 42 degrees. So adjust as close as possible to this area. The dish elevation adjustment will be used for fine tuning your signal.

Second, make sure the motor is adjusted to your area's latitude, and your numbers are correct. Your Latitude is 27.3 so it can be rounded to 27. You only set the motor to this number, and leave it. It will not be used for fine-tuning a signal.

Make sure your whole motor/dish is aimed as close as 185 on the compass as possible.

As for the LNB, LEAVE IT to neutral.. 0 position. The lnb is NOT USED for fine tuning the signal because the motor automatically does polarization adjustment.

Make sure your connections are good: LNB goes to motor LNB input, motor output goes straight to receiver IF Input. Nothing should be in between this connection (Except maybe an extension).

Now, as for the pole, make sure that it is tightened very good because the combination of the dish and motor put a good amount of weight on the pole and if the pole is not stable then it will probably not be level any more once the dish and motor are on. The pole must be LEVEL from BOTH sides, not just one side. DON'T BECOME LAZY AND IMPATIENT ON THIS STEP AND GET IT RIGHT!!! IF THIS ISN'T RIGHT NOTHING WILL BE AFTER!!

Ok once you have everything up above in good shape then time to do what you need on the receiver.

________________________________________________

Fire up the receiver and goto antenna setup. Scroll down and find AMC 5/ku. Set the lnb type to UNIVERSAL 1.

LNB power should be ON.

Diseqc should be set to off.

And TP should be set to 12182 H 23000. (If you don’t have this TP or Sat then you must add it manually through edit /tp satellite in the main menu)

Leave satellite scan to FTA.

And now, go to “positioner setting”, switch it to USALS, and hit OK.

You will now be in the positioner setting options. Go ahead and set the latitude to 27.3 N and longitude to 82.4 W. Make sure you use the right or left volume button to change the letters.

[Common Sense]:
Don't leave your latitude at S or your longitude at E.. it is totally different than N and W.

Now hit MOVE. The motor should now start moving the dish from its 0 position, which is your true south 82W to the AMC 5 position which is 79W. The motor will not move much because AMC 5 is fairly close to the true south position.

After you have done this, now is the time to adjust the signal and quality. You may or may not have a signal quality but chances are you don’t.

At this point, go out and adjust your DISH/MOTOR assembly. Move it VERY slowly left or right don't be afraid to deviate from your compass pointed direction. Notice any kind of changes you see on your signal. If your signal gets higher and moving around this area does not give you any quality, then leave it to the highest possible signal you are getting and lightly tighten it there.

Now its time to adjust the dish elevation. If you couldn’t get a good quality on the moving the assembly left/right then very slowly adjust the dish elevation at a very small increment up or down and then move the mast left/right.

A combination of the above two adjustments will get you the signal quality you need. For this you must have a reliable person communicating to you signal changes or quality changes at least every 5 seconds.

If you have found signal and quality by now, that is GREAT. What you would do is try to find the maximum possible quality once you have it.

By this point you should have successfully found your closest to true south sat: AMC 5. Hit "store" in the positioner setting options menu. And goto satellite scan, set to FTA and press OK. You will now search AMC 5 and should scan in some channels.

I know this is a lot of information but if you do it step by step and double checking every step you should be able to do it. If you have any question feel free to ask. GOOD LUCK!

well.. there's something you are missing somewhere. Try different variations of elevation, even moving way off calculated elevation. If you can, post some pictures of your installation.
