Help to locate sat.

I recently started RVing. A friend gave me his DISH dish. I made a tripod mount and set the dish to the settings as given on the Point dish instructions for my Zip code. I used an inline strength meter and the meter on the TV without any results. I could not get any change in either meter regardless of where I pointed the dish. Any obvious mistakes that I am making? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Make sure you are far enough away with your compass. The metal from the dish/mount will interfere with readings. Also move in slow increments. The settings given from the receiver are close to settings. You also can have no physical obstructions.

When I set up DSS dishes I have no trouble simply pointing the dish in the correct general direction when El and Tilt are set and slowly moving it. The receiver itself works great IMO. I have tried the signal meters only to pull them out of line and go back to just using the receiver as my meter... the signal is very strong and easy to get. My method my not be correct but it's never failed to get me a signal in under 5 minutes.
