I think the Wild Blue uses a higher freq band, like Ka or something. Plus, to do 2 way internet you need to have the capability to transmit as well as receive. With a regular FTA system, there are some internet signals up there that you can receive, but receiving doesn't do you any good unless you can transmit. There used to be some 1-way services, ie high speed satellite coming down, but you use slower land line going back, but I've heard that these didn't work all that well. I assume that there must still be a couple of these services around, I don't know. The Twinhan FTA PCI receivers have a program that comes with them called VisionDATA , that when run makes your satellite system a 1-way network interface, that shows up along side your regular NIC in your control panel. I've run this, and have monitored internet data flying by, but have never tried finding a 1 way service to subscribe to. I've since found that TSREADER gives a more convenient way of monitoring IP/DVB type signals, so I haven't used VisionDATA for several years. My original reason for trying VisionDATA was to monitor the NOAAPort data transmitted as UDP packets, but I finally gave up with that project.
I think I'd steer away from Wild Blue based on some of the complaints I've read:

Fortec 90 dish, SM3D22 motor
Standard 0.4db LNBF, Twinhan 102g receiver
Kaffeine and MythTV software on a 3GHz P4 w/NVidia graphics card
I've been with WildBlue for 18-months and it has worked very well for my family. The latency makes it less pleasing for browsing than cable or DSL and pretty much useless for twitch gaming.
Anyway, it's not a "do-it-yourself" installation. The dish is somewhat unique, having a subreflector and is matched to the transmitter/receiver assembly. Only certified WB installers are allowed to aim the dish and provision the modem. Ofcourse, you can always take their course and get "certified" yourself, if you are so inclined.
The dish on right in my avatar is a WildBlue dish.

wildblue sucks. its a rip off. they restrict bandwidth usage and will reduce it if you go over your monthly amount. if its all you can get like me, then its worth it but i would say the speed is like a middle of the road DSL. i really think it is total crap.
Guys, take a look in this forum section on my posting about HughesNet, you will come away with a different point of view about FAP's, HUGESNET IS BETTER!

From what I've heard you want to stay away from satellite internet unless it's your only choice for high speed. Too slow, too expensive.
Politicians should be required to wear uniforms like NASCAR drivers so we would know who their corporate sponsors are.
2way internet via sat is only for people who have no other access or choice.......
Here is europe its called Astra2Connect or Eutelsat TooWay...
