GREEN LIGHT FOR RTL TAKEOVER OF M6
The European Commission on March 15 gave the green
light for German television channel RTL to take over
French station M6. The decision came after a
commission investigation found that neither channel
had enough of a market share to make their combined
entity a threat to fair competition in Europe. The
merger comes after the Suez group decided to
relinquish the majority of its shareholding power in
M6. M6 previously was jointly controlled by RTL and
Suez group, with 48.4% and 37.6% of the equity rights,
respectively, but their voting rights were limited to
34% each. In February, Suez sold 29.2% of M6 shares on
the market, a move that prompted RTL to passively
acquire sole control of M6.
