Need help finding a new standalone DVB receiver

I purchased 2 Pansat 5000HC receivers, which are terrible. My wife will have my head if I screw up again. Can anyone recommend a PVR DV receiver, pre-programmed with U.S. accessable satellites? I'd appreciate any suggestions, and links where I might find out additional information.

I don't think any of them come preprogramed.

some people have stationary antenna's and this is an international product so I can kind of see why.

If they are, or you can download the information somewere Im not aware of it..

And to think the Pansat 5000 is a poor reciver? Why?
I would think it would be a pretty good reciver.. from the spec's Ive seen.

I think Im confused as to what your looking for.. a PVR a divice that can record/and delay and or record while your watching TV right?
If this is what your looking for, uhhh they dont make that from all Ive gathered.. But they do make PCI card recivers and you could build your own (or hire someone to build) a PVR FTA sattilite reciver for you... all the GB's you could possibly want, and completly configurable.. not exactly a user frendly solution though.. :mozilla_undecided: well.. it could be once its up and running..

I beg to differ on the DVR FTA combo in one unit. I am not 100% certain but it does seem as though I found them out there somewhere for around $650.00 each. I am not familiar with your particular receiver but do know the Fortec series of receivers are pretty simple to use / understand. They will take a bit to set up time wise but once set up to what you want seem pretty stable.

Something to remember concerning FTA receivers. They are from what I see designed for a very wide market which tends to lean towards many features you can / must setup yourself or have someone do it for you. As an example: Setting favorites to channel 1 as English channels and the second of 4 to Spanish language channels. Now you also have the ability to rename the channels (does come in handy) you can also reorder them for let's say putting your favorite of the favorites near the top of the list. Or if you have a motorized unit grouping your favs by sat so you are not moving the dish everytime you change a fav up one channel.

So once you get such a task accomplished which is after getting all the sats programmed you start on fav2 and the whole process starts again. Let's talk about programming sats. Assuming you have a steerable dish and a USALS compatable motor once you enter you location info the receiver finds the sats for you. Just save and now it is there. You must go through one by one. Why? Built for a large market thus many sats you will not use are also available in your sat list. You only need save the sats you will be using.

Do your channels search and walla we have TV! Get familiar with Lyngsat.com as it is probably your guide to what each sat offers in the way of channels. There are a few in depth settings to do for specific things you might want but aqll in all pretty simple to accomplish.

I would talk with PanSat people here before I jumped ship on the receivers you have. What are you trying to accomplish and what equipment are you using?

Have a great day
Steve

I got currious so I did some digging.. the Panstat 700HC seems to fit the PVR FTA bill and it looks like its going for around $450 right now.. (it has a 60gig hardrive)
http://www.pansatusa.com/product/receiver-700HC.htm

I did run across some others but they were $$$$$$$$ oh.. a Kaonmedia reciver does this and is Mpeg 4 compliant (records up to 6 shows simaltainiusly) but you have to order those from Korea..

here is the makers web page..

http://www.kaonmedia.net

I only saw Mpeg4 compliant on the other forum, I can't quite wrap my head around what they are capable of right now from the manifactures website..

I found some sellers of there stuff when I shortened the product name to KVR product number and googled it. like KVR 1000 plus

Sorry I wasn't clear about what I am looking for. Basically I'm looking for a Pansat 5000HC like receiver that actually works. My first 5000HC died 3 days after the warranty expired. The second has had a dozen or so firmaware updates, but still has several errors in their timed recording logic. Stupid stuff like it records everything a day after it was supposed to and it looks for recording conflicts by time, but ignores the day of the week. Whatever my next receiver is, it won't be a Pansat.

No, I need a standalone receiver for my wife to record her FTA stuff on. She doesn't want to use a computer for this purpose.

Well, many of the receivers I have owned have been pre-programmed with either Euopean or Middle East satellites (i.e. it knows the satellite transponders, frequency, polarity, etc.) of those satellites. Yes, other satellites can be manually added, its just much easier if has the information in ROM from the factory. I forgot to mention earlier, that having blind scan capability is a plus.

hmm maybe you could google other people's experince with the HC line of recivers.. the 500 might have just been buggy (the 700 could be miles ahead who knows?)

When I have a little more free cruzin the net time Ill check and see if I can find another brand for you though..

If anyone else knows of another brand just go ahead and post it..
