DSR 101 plus Help please! CH edit software

While using the "Hanaro_zl9" program, DSR101 keeps going into fail mode.

Using laptop win98, DB9 female to female null modem (crossover) cable.
set for COM1

With the receiver on, I click on "data receive". the picture from the reciever goes off, and on the front display of the receiver, it says "Start" then quickly says "Send" and then within 2-3 seconds says "Fail"
No data seems to be transfering from the reciever to the PC.
Am I doing something wrong?
Receiver has current firmware since shipped in December 2002
