Will a FTA receiver work for me in NY?

I have been researching this free to air receivers for 2 months now.I found a place near me that sells satcruiser receivers.I called him up and he told me that it wouln't work for me cause it is basically for overseas programs.I am just looking into like Upn and Wb and NBC ABC CBS and FOX and a few more. The more channels the better.
So now am I stuck because I live in upstate NY and this free to air receivers won't do me any good?
If I can do this FTA what would be a good receiver and would I get many channels?
Any help would be great cause I am going into this a little blind ,but I am a fast learner.

FTA in NYC

If your looking into US locals, G10R has a couple of them. Take a look at http://www.lyngsat.com/g10r.shtml . With a 30 inch dish, you'll be able to receive the frequencies that have 5 digits.

I'm in MN and get G10 great. There are PAX, WB, UPN, FOX & ABC networks on there.

I havent found a CBS on KU Band (which is what most FTA is..the 30" dish) and there is one NBC up there temporarily (KPLC in LA..their tower collapsed) but thats on a different satellite.

On G10 with a receiver and 30" dish, there are the following "Networks"

5 PAX
2 ABC
2 FOX
4 UPN
2 WB
3 Univision
1 Telefutura
Couple Shop at Home

If you don't want ethnic programming, G10 is your best bet for English programming.

About G10

Where would I buy a g10 at?About how much do they cost? This may be a stupid question but can you get like HBO or showtime or like nickeldeon?
Why are these Free To Air recievers not very popular in UNited States? Or am I behind in the times?

Re: About G10

1. G10R is the name of a satellite located at 123W.
2. You can buy dish/receiver here.
http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Order/Systems.htm
3. FTA is more like a hobby. If you are looking for getting free Premium channels such as HBO, ShowTime, PPV...this system is not for you.
Besides these local channels mentioned above, there are ton of ethnic channels broadcasted from other countries arround the world such as China, Vietnam, Korea, Middle East countries.....

new to free to air

I'm new to free to air and I encourage you to try it. Just be patient
in the set up situation. If you have experience with Dish or Directv
(if you put up a system) that helps too.
g10 has only about 40 channels but they are free forever - no
bills from clowns like Dish network. Also, I've seen in the last week
a royals game and a memphis grizzlies (basketball) game,
and discussion about Red Sox one weekend (VT station) so there is
a little sports if you're into that.
