Finding Satellites from Baghdad - Motorized system seek !

I am a newbie, I live on a Military base in Baghdad, I have two recievers that I bought locally. (Hama & Strong).

I think I need a reciever that can support a "scan the sky and find the satellites" function. I have a signal meter and would love a reciever that could lock into the locations of the satellites and tell you which ones it found. Is this possable ?

It seems that if i tell the reciever what my lattitude and long it should maybe be able to calculate the angles and azimuths to the sats. Even if it can't I would thing the reciever couold scan and lock on satellites that it finds.

Maybe I am assuming too much, looking at the Fortec Star Mercury II, seems like it should work, will review the manual.

The problem here is I am surently looking at Turksat 1C, there are only 2 good english channels. SO i figure more satellites would maybe get me some BBC or someother english chnnels.

    Suggestions please .

    Bob

I have the Merc2 reciever here in Maine and it is a good unit.
The manual is nothing to judge by....the receiver is way better
than the documentation. The people who designed the receiver
had their sh*t together and it shows as you learn to use it. The
book that comes with it is near useless. There was a learning curve
but I guess its no worse than a video game.

It does have the mode that hunts all the sats in view of your location.
I hunted them down one at a time because I was learning about the
mounting of the antenna (virt mast, right elevation, etc) but now that
I have it tracking the arc correctly Im sure it could do an auto scan....
maybe I should let it do that.

    good luck

Bob, you need a motor to scan more satellites. Go to Lyngsat.com to find the satellite locations that are available to you and a list of channels on each satellite. Satellite Finder / Dish Pointing Calculator with Google Maps | DishPointer.com is also a great website to help you find your way in aiming a dish to a satellite. We all find that taking a tv and the receiver to the dish and using the receiver as a meter is the best way to aim a dish.

If you need more help, list all the equipment you do have at the moment - LNB, dish, motor, receiver and anything else you think is appropriate.
VA 39N, 78W, Mercury II, Fortec 31", 36", 72", SG2100, DG-280, H180 (two DSR-922's sitting in a closet and to be the next project) HDTV TV with no pay tv.
