AHH!!

Two weeks and still ********** with this!!
Zip 24957
Lon -80.4
Lat 37.9

24=46.1-(60-37.9) I think this is correct :?:
So my dish is at 24 the motor is at 38 the mount is plumb.
True south shoud be 187
I have no idea what sat is true south.

Fortec 786v3
hh120
Fortec 31 or 36" dish
universal LNB

I get no quality at all. I have changed the mount type and location 3 times, there are no obstructions south.
Rcvr:
Search index 1
Antenna 1
Telstar 5
Search mode NIT FTA
TP21:
lnb skew (gray)
Positioner DiSeqc 1.3 - lat 37.9w lon 80.4

I have printed out the install instructions.

I have harrased tech support at least three times.

Should I be able to find a sat due south? which one?

I have even called an installer to help but they are too busy with dtv installs. I am at the end of my rope and ready to JUMP! :x

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Have you read the instruction of how to set up h-h mount. If not, please spend some time to read it:
http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Installati...stallation.htm
Your truesouth sat is AMC5 at 79W:
http://www.lyngsat.com/amc5.shtml
1. Set your mount/dish elevation.
2. Set skew at 0
3. Go to menu, make sure the lnbf LO is set as "universal"
4. Go to AMC5, pick a transponder. Remember to pick a active ones when tuning the dish at AMC5. Few active ones are:
11742 V 11110
11808 H 4146
12182, H, 23000
5. The azimuth of your truesouth is 180 +/- magnetic deviation. Check out the link below for magnetic deviation value:
http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Installati...Calculator.htm
6. Aim the dish towards AMC5 direction, move the whole mount left/right. If elevation needs to be adjust, only adjust the DISH elevation.
7. Once you get lock on AMC5, try to maximize the signal quality.
8. Then move the dish East or West to program other satellites. Check out lyngsat.com for more info on satellite position.

Your truesouth sat is AMC5 at 79W:
http://www.lyngsat.com/amc5.shtml
Thank you, this gives me a starting point

1. Set your mount/dish elevation.
hh120 to 37
dish is at 20 (I tried 24, get better signal at 20)

2. Set skew at 0
yep

3. Go to menu, make sure the lnbf LO is set as "universal"
yep

4. Go to AMC5, pick a transponder. Remember to pick a active ones when tuning the dish at AMC5. Few active ones are:
11742 V 11110
yep

yep, about 187

6. Aim the dish towards AMC5 direction, move the whole mount left/right. If elevation needs to be adjust, only adjust the DISH elevation.
yep got a signal meter from Radio Shark and the thing pegs out but still 0, no, nadda quality :x

7. Once you get lock on AMC5, try to maximize the signal quality.
not happening

Things end here. I can get a max signal of 72 and 0 quality.
I am loosing it!! A month now and no results, my kingdom for an installer to fix this thing!!

Re: AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Chris,
Please don't put your frustration on me, I don't work for Sadoun...:-), just simply mod this forum at my spare time.
#6. Instead of using radio shack meter, use signal of your receiver to tune the dish. Don't put any external signal meter between lnbf and receiver. A external meter will is a DC sucker...:-), which might cause the receiver signal meter not work properly.

Also, do not trust the dish elevation scale since the accuracy of the scale depends on the dish brand. Some have reported that the dish elevation scale is about 5-7 deg off. You might lower the dish elevation scale few degrees.
Feel free to post your questions here. Other members and I will try to help you as much as we can.
Michael

Sorry, I have been beating this thing for a month now. I even had an installer promise he would come tomorrow, that was two weeks ago and not even a call. If I wasnt in a one pig town I would call another company. If I had the money I would subscribe to pay sattelite, it is far easier and I have done it before.

I will try to alleviate my frustration with a little humor so perhaps the read may be at least a little entertaining.

The meter on the receiver never exceeds 70 signal and 0 quality. I can point the dish at the ground or stand in front of it, the signal doesnt fall below 60, even with my fat carcus standing in the front of the thing.

Minor movements of the dish result in little to no change in (receiver) meter readings. Even pointing the dish north results in little change. This is why I bought the meter.
http://sadoun.com/Sat/Products/Acces...gnal_meter.htm
At least it (the external meter) seems to be responding. I am sure the whole thing could be me seriously screwing up. I was an auto mechanic, a computer technician and I still am an aircraft mechanic. I was in the Air Force and the Army, I know what azimuth is, I even remember some about land navigation. I beleive that I have read the directions correctly (although, like I said it may very well be me) and followed them.

Using the meter at its highest sensativity and making minor adjustments to the dish I quickly gain signal, further decreasing the sensativity on the meter and adjusting the dish brings even more signal until I finally got a pegged signal with the sensativity at the lowest setting. This tells me:

1. I am hitting the sattelite and there is a problem with the receiver and/or LNB(because I have tried this without the rotor in the loop).

2. I am hitting the wrong sattelite (no way for me to know that) although only very minor changes to my original positioning of the dish got the (external) meter moving.

3. I am a complete fruit loop (absolutley possible)

Tonight, the neighbors are sure I am crazy because as the t-storm ended I was climbing to the roof at 2130 to try to adjust the thing again. My wife grew up overseas and I got this thing for her to watch some TV. My frustration is compounded by the unhappy spouse.

What I have tried:

Reset the receiver .. again-Fortek 786v3

beat head against wall

take rotor out of loop

beat wall with tools

relocate dish from ground position to a level moveable platform just to experiment

throw tools :?

buy a peak mount tripod and take the whole thing to the roof for a better view

write things on a bulletin board

beg an installer for help (I cant give money away)

call sadoun support three times

take an uneducated stab that I have a malfunction in the hardware or the installer (ME)

If I had a second receiver or LNB I would continue my troubleshooting as I have been trained to do in similar situations, I have no access to test equipment and no known good parts to try so I am at 0 progress save a headace and an unhappy wife.

Is anyone in WV that could help a poor lost lamb?? :?:

Is it extra tough for a mechanic to get a dish ligned up?... ahem... I guess, it is the flying wrenches, and bad cussing that will make your dish spin on its own... I grew up around auto/tractor mechanics (uncle, father, etc) and know the feeling.

Take a deep breath, and follow my instructions...

~ Do a master reset on the receiver
~ Select a satellite you want to use to aim your dish (let's say T5)
~ After making sure that the motor is at 0 position.
~ Use a compass to line up everthying to TRUE SOUTH as much as you can eyeball it
~ Use USALS to move your Dish to T5
~ When the dish stops, check if you get a green signal/quality bars (make sure you use TP25 for Telstar 5)
~ If no GREEN signal/Quality, move the whole motor/dish assemblly by hand East / West no more than 5 degrees to each direction.
~ If still no quality, Raise or lower the elevation on the Dish 1-2 degrees and sweep again the whole assembly by hand +/- 5 degrees

Good luck

The signal strength meter is not really important, since it includes noise. That's why no matter which direction you point your dish at, the signal meter does not really react. The signal strength only jumps up when you are close to hit a satellite.
The advantage of using the signal meter is that each satellite has its own freq, meaning if you use a freq on AMC5 which is not availabe on other closeby one, once you get lock, you are 100% sure your dish hits AMC5. In contrast, the external meter only shows you the dish hits on a satellite, no indication on which sat you lock on. There are other expensive portable signal meter which can tell you what sat the dish locks on. These are for professional installer.
Below is a list of active transponders on AMC5:
11742 V 11110
11808 H 4146
12182 H 23000.
Few things to double check:
Lnbf power: On.
Double click at LO universal: Low 9750, high 10600.
Don't place the compass close to the dish. It will show you wrong direction.
This might be silly but still worth checking: make sure the cable connected to the "sat in" or "signal in". There are 2 ports, one is signal in, the other is signal out.
That's all I can think off. If you live in N.California (Bay Area), let me know. I might be able to come over to tune the dish for you.
Michael

IMHO forget the Radio Shack signal meter and take the receiver and a small TV up on the roof (preferably on a non-thunderstormy day) and align the dish using the Fortec internal signal meter. As Michael says -- those external meters will lock onto any satellite rather than just the one you are looking for; this will drive you nuts.

What you should do - to gain experience with these FTA dishes - is try to lock onto one satellite first - say T5 - and then after you are familiar with downloading channels and changing transponder data, etc.; you can try again with the motorized setup. From my own experience I would never have been able to align my motorized dish if I had not previously set up fixed dish installations - its just too tricky.

Oh BOY

You are not gonna beleive this..

OK, go a lock on AMC 5, I dont know why, just did. moved the dish a little again and popped into the green. I still dont know why it works all of a sudden now. quality at 99

Now the not gonna beleive part.. I then tried to switch to amc 3 and t5, the motor (HH120) isnt responding :?

Before the motor worked but no quality, now there is quality and no motor.. Are you all sure there isnt something hinky with the motor maybe?

Make sure you connect the cable correctly.
Lnbf----h-h----receiver.
Double check the long/lat you keying for using USALS.

HAPPY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :!:

Thanks for all the help!!! I still dont understand why the signal popped up all of a sudden, very intriguing, oh well as long as the thing works. Another master reset did the trick, now on to other forums to locate channels and figure out how to program favorites...
