At least for the receivers I've used, the answere is absolutely nothing. I still have the "97" listed as "T1" {Telstar 301,401} on my main receiver, just ignoring the changes to T5,
IA5, and now Galaxy25. The only reason you have to keep track of the current names is for communicating on these forums. Most receivers don't care what the sat name is. However a couple people have posted about using receivers that seem to try to extract sat names from the signal, which is possible for some signals, but in general not possible, so it's possible that some receiver that is trying to be too smart might be confused. But in general don't worry about what you name satellites. You could name them Ford, Chevy or Honda if you want.

Yes you should always have the receiver set to match the type of LNB you are using.
