Snow

Well, we're finally getting some snow in Maine, about 10" on the way to what they predict will approach 20". My big dish is parked down on C3 (or whatever is's called now). It's still getting C-band, but if there was Ku on that sat, it would be long gone due to the weight of the snow pulling the dish down, and if I had left IT on AMC3, I wouldn't even be getting C-band on it.

However, this is the first real test of the little 3' Fortec dish. I still have it up on AMC3 on the PBS channels, and it's going strong. The offset design, and slippery surface allows the snow to just slip off. Big dish is half covered with snow, but there isn't any at all on the little dish. Even if it had picked up snow, it's easy to knock off, unlike the big dish that is all dented (some dents as big as a softball) from me hitting it with a broom.

Anyway, I'm impressed with the little thing. I didn't expect to see any satellite until Friday.

Had 2" in 10 min. here on yesterday and it was the soft power flakes. Yup it was 2" thick layer covering the dish as well on 39 elev. IA5, also on motor dish whitesprings.

Did not stick for long as the sun came out. The 6" since then keeps melting away so no sticky even with the black ice last night.

I was seriously considering this can of non stick sat spray as I thought it might freeze onto the dish. This was the only time the quality went from 60% to 3%.

Amazing what this fortec 90cm can get up to, did not expect the performance and was planning on getting on the ice roof and cleaning it then the family informed me the signal is back and I saw the dish was clean.

WOW

We had lots of snow here in Columbus. Probably 12" so far in the last 3 days. Temp this morning was 1 F (-18 C). Schools and business were closed for 2 days (Tue & Wed). We were open with a skeleton staff (those who drive an SUV) .

Last weekend I took the kids and went to Mad River Mtn (30 mins NW of Columbus). We had a good time skiing. The snow was good.

Yeah we got about 12" over here too (North of Dayton) - I had the quad out with the snow blade. Quite a bit of fun - made clearing the driveway much nicer!

I wonder, does any company make "shakers" for these smaller dishes? I recall my first mesh dish having a shaker motor installed on it so that you could press the button inside and it would vibrate the snow off. I know the little dishes aren't mesh, but a good shake would probably still clear them off if they filled up from a good hard snow (and save a trip onto the roof!)

LOL.....The way I have things pieced together on my small dishes, shaking them would be the last thing I would want to do. Hope you all get out of the deep freeze soon.

not that I know of but they do offer heater grids to melt the snow and ice off of small dishes. if you mount it on the roof this might be the way to go.
