I'm pretty sure that winzip is shareware, and if you don't purchase it , you will get a small reminder that you are in "evaluation" mode, but it still works.

Plus, I was under the impression that Windows XP has the capability of unzipping zip files built in doesn't it??? I use WinZIP, so I'm not positive what capabilities came with Winzip and which came with Windows, but I think that's the case.
I think that the basic zip process itself is public, so that there are several programs around the can "unzip", but there are different ways that things are zipped, and the integration with the OS that are the main things specific to WinZip and other similar programs.
