Finding Nimiq 1
just purchase a new birddog sat finder which supposed to be the best on the market.
It supposed to tell me which sat I am hitting.
I have read everything about 100 times and based on my location, NIMIQ 91 is at 200.5 degrees and elevatioin is 46.4.
NiMIQ 2 is at 185 degress and elevation is 48.3.
Those are two total different setting.
I am using a 18'' round dish with a dual LNB (DTV)
When I set my dish to point to NIMIQ 1 it come up on my sat finder and NIMIQ 1 sat found which is what I wanted.
However I did not move the dish at all, I switch sat finder to NIMIQ 2 just to see what will happen. It say's NIMIQ 2 Sat found ok.
Then I connected my dishnet receiver and it said wrong sat bev 82.
How is it possible for to hit NIMIQ 2 when my dish is set and pointed towards for NIMIQ 1?
It seems I can hit NIMIQ 2 when I elevation is between 45 and 50. Is this normal?

I think that Nimiq1 and Nimiq2 are very similar with respect to what transponders are active, and I "think" that is how the Birddog thing tells the difference, or in this case didn't. I know that when searching for either of these two sats I have been confused at times with respect to which one I was seeing, particularly since nearly everything is usually scrambled. Also, if the uplinkers have changed the lineup at all since your meter's memory was created, then it may not know the difference. I think that on other non-DBS sats, it will do a better job.

First off... Why would you want to use a Dishnet receiver to get Bell ExpressVu? Dishnet receivers will not lock onto Nimiq 91 or 82. Likewise, an ExpressVu receiver won't lock the Dishnet satellites. The firmware prohibits this.
Also, if you are using an old 18" DTV dish with one LNB, there is no way you'll get both Nimiq satellites from it - you need a 20" dish with a Y-adapter and an SW21 switch -- like the Dish 500.
As for the Birdog locking both Nimiqs on one setting (Nimiq 91); this was normal for some of them; recent file configurations fixed this issue - at least some of them. I have two Birdogs and one picks off the two Nimiqs but the other (with older firmware) does not. You could try updating your configuration file ---> www.birdog.tv

I hate to contradict you but most Dish boxes will "see" Nimiq 1 & 2. The signal bar does show signal but it says "wrong satellite-ExpressVu 91". I was aiming a Dish500 today and I was too far over and hit 91 and my Dish box said that (and its an old 5000 receiver)

Yes, true. What I meant really was that DN boxes won't process ExpressVu signals - they "see" the bird but that's it. Reverse is true of ExpressVu boxes. I remember back in '98 and '99 the old ExpressVu model 2700s would "see" the EchoStar sats BUT, and dig this... if you left them locked onto the EchoStar sats for 2 hours -- they morphed themselves into Dishnet receivers and would no longer recognize the ExpressVu sats!! To get them back to ExpressVu boxes you had to lock them onto the Nimiqs - actually ExpressVu was beaming off Anik back then - and wait another few hours -- then presto !! You've got your ExpressVu box back. I did more than a few service calls to fix this after DIY satellite installers hit the EchoStar birds by mistake.

yep. I have read many posts where someone took a virgin Bell box and left it on 119 too long and it downloaded Dish software and made the unit a doorstop
Thank god they finally fixed that so a brand new box won't do that

Accordingly to everything I read, Nimiq 1 elevation is 46.3 and Nimiq 2 is at 48.3. When i set my dish to 46, i am hitting Nimiq 2. Is it safe to assume that if I move my dish down to 44 do you think I will be able to hit Nimiq 1?

if you are hitting nimiq 2 you need to move your dish to the west 7 degrees.

if you are not hitting it change elevation by 1 degree up or down and try swinging east and west to get a lock continue doing this to you get best signal.

I have done this I hit a signal from elevation 42 to 48. My birddog say I am hitting Nimiq but the Dishnet receiver is saying wrong sat Expressvu 82. How is it possible for me to hit the same sat from those different setting?

Let's see if I can clarify this a bit. Nimiq sats are BellExpressVU. You will always get wrong sat when using a DishNet receiver. It is a canned error message. It is not a Dishnet sat.

No I am trying to get Nimiq 1/Bell Expressvu 91. I am using my dishnet reciever as a guide. I want my dishnet reciever to say wrong sat Expressuv 91. My sat meter say Nimiq 1 but my receiver say Expressvu 82.
I move my dish from elevation 42 to 48 and my receiver will say wrong sat Expressvu 82. It seems I cannot hit 91. I thought if I can hit 82, I should be able to hit 91 because they are so close together.

Why not just use the BellExpressVu receiver? Seems a whole lot easier.

Ok I am at a total loss here. Why are you trying to lock a BellExpressVu sat without a BellExpressVu receiver? What are you to gain here?
