installation on a slopped roof
I just bought a M-1 system with an upgraded 90 cm dish. The only ideal place to set up this system without obstruction is the roof, which is 45 degree slopped. I have two questions: 1) is it safe to have a 90 cm and a pretty heavy motor installed on a roof ? by the way, I live in NJ 2) how can it the dish be installed on slopped roof and still keep the mast plumb? Thanks for your help in advance.

Also, make sure the dish's LNB arm doesn't bottom out and hit the roof when the motor swings; a 45 degree roof is pretty steep...

1) yes its safe if mounted properly (ie: lag bolted into roof rafters not just the plywood decking)
2) keeping the mast plumb is possible by using the correct mount installed in the correct manner. See Sadoun's mounting kits and look at the ones with a really long pole -- that will avoid the dish hitting the roof during motor swings. Also, make sure the intended swing arc is pointing out from the roof. In other words, you want the motor to swing so that the east and west limits position the dish reflector (pan) perpendicular to the roof's edges.

If you set up near the top off the roof, your dish should clear regardless.

Yes, it should. But who wants to climb all the way up a 45 degree roof?? That's a 12/12 pitch...

Bobkat --
True, but it's just as steep 1 foot above the eaves as it is at the top, so the climb isn't any tougher!
Posting here (mostly) so that the mentioned avatar can be viewed.
That is a Sadoun M-1 system, with upgraded LNB (Invacom Quad with 2 linear and 2 circular ports), installed on the roof months ago, and I need to tweak it a bit before the weekend -- I can't see anything on Echo 7 at all (not that there's much to see there but the NASA channel).. and NASA is (tentatively) launching Discovery this coming Saturday...
So, guess what I'm doing after work one day this week?

For those using the mounts that come with the dish (Fortec) definitely use the side braces as Brian has. I have attempted to use the same type of mount with a SG2100 motor with no side braces and the mount has a tendency to slip. The mount I have came with a Wingard dish and did not have any side braces. Could not use them where I have the dish mounted anyway. The Fortec dish is mounted on a pole which is about to happen to the Wingard
Commented here as your avatar is an ideal shot of a system installed with the mount that comes with the dish.
Brian. While the climb to the top is no greater you sure do build up a lot more speed as you are sliding off

Steve -- true enough. In fact, the fall itself isn't even a problem... it's that sudden stop at the end that does all the damage.

LOL !! How true. Actually, in all fairness, if I was doing that install, I would do all the work right off the ladder; I wouldn't climb onto the roof at all. So this is why I would mount the dish about 2 feet or so from the eaves. This is good because:
1) no need to get on the roof and risk falling off
2) the dish can swing (if motorized) out over the roof
3) snow unlikely to build up on the dish because it hangs over the roof
4) if snow does build up, its easy to take a broom (with a really long handle... ) and sweep the dish clean

y'know, bob... with all the satellite systems I've installed over the past 3 or 4 years, snow accumulation never once arose as a potential problem...

whoa now, steve!!
I moved to FL in '95. Grew up in upstate NY. Adirondacks. PLENTY of snow! ...and I've shoveled probably 10 times my body weight in snow, in the dark at some ungodly hour, just to slide to work! ...moved here to get away from that.
seriously.. i like the snow. lovely to look at, etc... but just got tired of having to deal with it, just to go back and forth to work.

Working from the ground for simplicity.....I will install my dish on the roof when my friend has time to help. Maybe it is safer for you to work on the ground....I have limited "look angles" from the ground but at least I can do it. Just a suggestion
