Help with installation

Hey,

My husband and I tried to install the dish and we can't get any readings. The sight we put it up is on the roof, there was previously a "dish network" type dish in this location, we never used it because it was from the houses' previous owner. Our new dish is a fortec star 31", we want to pick up FTA channels from Ia5. When I use the "satelitte locator device" i do get some noise. The pole appears to be plumb. We had the receiver and TV outside and we got 0%-6% the bar just flashed around those numbers. Once I think I saw a 12%, but it wasn't steady. Could the roof be in the way? It inclines in front of the dish, but it didn't hender the reception of the previous dish????? Should I keep trying to find a signal or not??? We made small adjustments and waited at least 10 seconds between turning it.

Thanks
Lisa

I am having the exact same problem

I am having the exact same problem. Same thing is happening with the level indicator. Cannot pick up one single satellite. Trying to get G10 but tried several different ones, no luck. I have the S1 package with the 90cm dish. zipcode is 29532. I used Sadoun's sat calculator. Please help.

HI JOJO and welcome to the forum,

based on the information you have provided here is your numbers:

Zip Code: 29532 PO Name: Darlington (SC)
Population (1990): 22271
Location: 34.300294 N, 79.873221 W

On the Dish you have to make sure these 3 settings are correct:

1-Dish elevation (up and down movement of the dish) for Galaxy 10 is 29.8 (this is approximate)

2-Azimuth (this is the west east movement of the dish) will be about 245 to 248 (stand away from anything metal when getting this reading on a compas) and make sure the dish is sitting on a perfectly vertical mast, not absolutely required but as plumb as possible.

3-LNB skew (this is the dgrees you will turn the LNB counter cockwise) 45.3 degrees

Now the reciever:

This is a fortec star NA reciever make sure you are choosing the correct LNB type in the installation-antenna setup- lnb type uni is what you should have.
also under that same screen you want tp freq to be 11720 V 27692
positioner off
diseq C and sat lock off
scan mode can be all or FTA, ( you can play with the blind scan later once you get a signal lock)

Now when moving the dish looking for signal, you want to be searching for it in the range mentioned in steps 1 -3 above as this is where you will most likely hit it. Move the dish very very very slowly and watch your signal screen, you want to go left to right in very very small increments and up and down with every increment till you see the signal light up on the screen. Its best to have a small TV out where you are working that is connected to the reciever and LNB. Also make SURE all of your connections are correct from the LNB going to the back of the reciever, to LNB IN.

Make sure your reviever is set to an active transponder on G10 when you are moving the dish in search of signal, for G10 here are the active transponders: http://www.lyngsat.com/g10r.html
TP 1 starting at 11720 frequency Vertical symbol rate 27692

Keep in mind, Echostar9 at 121 over powers the G10 123 signal at times sicne they are so close so it may take a little extra work to dial in G10 at 123. Once you get a good lock on a transponder then you want to adjust the dish elevation angle to peak the signal.

all of this and more can be found here:

Hello cantuseacompass,

Please try to update your original post rather than opening new threads everytime you have a question, since it will make it easier for us to track information you have provided or havent, and any installation steps you have done, or havent done.

based on your original post on May 3rd you are at:

36 lat and 80 long , you have 3 seetings to work with for a stationary setup:

1-dish elevation is 44.5 (this is approximate)
2-azimuth is 213 (this is the west east directional movement)
3-If this is a stationary setup (no motor) dont forget your positive LNB skew of 21.9 degrees (turning the LNB counter clockwise 21.9 degrees)

So you said you were going to get a professional in your last post but looks like you are still working on this. Read my post above for JoJo and you can get the signal after trying a few times. first get your setting all in place then start searching for the signal slowly and patiently. Dont move the dish too fast from side to side, move it 1/32 on an inch increments side to side and up and down. Also its best to take a tv out there where you are working and plan on spending few hours if not a day there till you get it if this is your first time. Once you get your signal and peak out the signal level, then you can run all of your wiring anyway you want.

best of luck..

I will use your info this weekend or when I can get a chance if I can get my wife's "to do list" down a little. You say that this can take several hour to do?

To Can't use a compass. Your roof very well may be the problem. Your Dish Network dish was most likely pointed at 101. You want 97. This means a rotation on the shaft of4 degrees. What might have cleared the peak before may not now. Do not know without actually seeing the install. You were close to finding something when it moved up to 12. 6 means you are seeing nothing.

Find a signal and we will try to determine what sat you are on. We can go from there.

just wondering

We got it installed professionally yesterday. He said the roof wasn't in the way, but it took him a few hours to find the signal, because the type of LNB i had wasn't responding to his equipment correctly. He thought it was broken for a while, but wwe finally found the signal. I have a fortec star receiver and on the manual adjust screen the highest that little orange bar went up to was a reading of 66% , is that normal? I thought it was supposed to reach 100%

Thanks

Hi JoJo,

yea them to do wife lists never end do they, or house chores, I installed my stuff In February and with all the rain and busy schedule I havent been up on the roof since to dial in the arc. I plan on finally getting up there this Saturday and knocking it out. Well the answer to your question, it all depends how good you are with fishing for the signal, it can take 30 mins it can take 4 hours, just closely get all the settings dialed in and start looking for it, you will get it, just taked a slow hand and some good patience. If you have trouble, post some questions and we will try to help you out anyway possible..

Cantuseacompass: How do you like it so far? Was it what you expected? Now comes a motor By the way the lnb was most likely responding just fine. He wasn't hitting signal. Depending on what transponder you are going for will vary in signal readings but 66% does sound a bit low for IA5

Motor????

Hey,

I hadn't thought of a motor....
My husband is forign and he wanted to get a channel from his homeland, so that's why we were going through all of this. I like it, believe it or not we only got 2 channels before we bought the satellite. Now we get alot of other channels but most of them are in languages I don't understand. It's fun looking at something different. Thanks for all the help everybody

Something to look at is the lnb skew. Unless you are located at 97 degrees longitude your lnb coax connection should not be straight down. Should be rotated somewhat in the mount. This will help with strength and quality of signal. A motor will allow you to move the dish giving your the ability to watch channels from multiple satellites.
