Inquiry about How To read Azimuth ...

My Location : 33.7N ; 117.9W
Fortec lifetime Utra Receiver
LNB : Universial Quattro
PanSat PM900 Motor

Acording to the PanSat motor PM 900 manual , I set the motor at 34 degrees ; 25 degrees for dish elavation …. It states that my true south is 165 degrees ( 180- 15 ) …
Now My question is :
I am in California… Is 165 degrees is on my left side { same as Washington State side } or do I need to point my dish to the East { New York } ?
and is SatMex 5 116.8W is my true South satellite { mine longtitude is 117.9W } or can I choose Echo 7 119W or G10 123W is my choice as well as the other 2 ?

Thanks for helping a n00bie here ,
Sincerely yours ,
Benny …

PS: can anyone helps me how to read the Compass ?
i know it sound ignorant but I tried to overcome this problem but cannot get out of the wood yet ....
Thanks in advance !!!

That is a good spot for determining your magnetic declination.

I wonder if anyone has deteremined their true south using the sun and a shadow stick?

if you are standing over a compass that is pointed due south, sats to the east are "left" and sats to the west are "right".

I'm not sure if I understand you manual's instructions for due south. you should either pick Satmex5 or G10. Note: Satmex5 beams mostly to Latin America, im not sure how far into CA you can get it. So my example will be for G10. Also, you want to try to avoid using DBS satellites (like Echo 7) for pointing because they are not true FTA signals. Much more powerful, and set at a different LO frequency than the rest of the FTA sats.

So, for G10 at 123, looking over your compass, you want to move the dish to the right 5.1 degrees to 185.1 this is geographic without factoring magnetic declination. see the above link for that. Also use this link:

still confusing and not out of the w00d yet ? :(

kevision,
Is 165 degrees is on my left side { same as Washington State side } or do I need to point my dish to the East { New York } ?
if I stand over a compass that is pointed due south ... my 165 degrees should be on the LEFT to the EAST ? or is it 165 degrees to the right WEST ?
Right now I cannot get any sat signals IA5 and G10 because I have to mod the bracket on the back of the dish to make the pole of the motor fitted so I cannot measure my angle 25 degrees of dish elavation ... Poor me !!!

Can anyone of you calculate if my location are 33.7N 117.9W ... the motor elavation should be 34 degrees ? dish elavation is 25 degrees ? Do they sound right ?

Thanks for all your inputs ,,,
Benny...

idipacker,,,
Not I... 'cos I am too n00bie... dunno how !!!
thanks 2 j00... I just found out that my magnitude declination is 13 instead of 15 as the site/motor manual showed ... I dunno if it helps me or not but at least I know it changes from time to time ...

Laterz,,,

If you are facing south, 165 is to your left (East)
