For instance Galaxy 10R at 123.0°W Whats with the West???

Hey I am trying to understand this. So when I am trying to find Galaxy 10R from my house here in Northern California I look at the compass at point the dish to 123.0 degrees? Whats West for at the end? Someone told me earlier I would point my dish to the west of me.
Anything above 122 is west of me. Anything below is east of me. That was Jamal at Sadoun. What does he mean? I don't understand this figuring. Just west of me? That wouldn't be anywhere near 123.0 degrees on my compass. If I can't get the answers out of this forum I am calling that support line everytime I get a chance to get some answers to this. What they should say on the support line when your talking to them. Ok anymore questions then you may have a kick one. But if they cut the call short your left begging for information. Any answers you may have is good for me. Jerry_Satellite out. =P~

The short answer is dont worry about it. The longer answer is that if you were looking at the earth from above the North Pole, satellites from 0 to 180 degrees (everything east of Greenwhich) gets an 'E'. Everthing west of 0 gets a 'W'.

The number represents the line of longitude projected out into space. if you stood on 123 West longitude, G10R would be above you. How far above you depending on lattitude.

It does not relate to dish pointing, which requires a compass bearing. If you are at 122 West longitude and G10 is at 123, your compass bearing is 181 (1 degree to the "right" as you face south).

Ok I will ignore the East and West thing. lol. I would like to see some maps on all that to absorb that info more. About Galaxy 10R from my Northern CA home at 122 degrees Longitude. Now I don't get this. I just went outside and pointed the dish to 123 degrees. And the sat finder went off and then I dialed it in the the highest I could. You don't think that is Galaxy 10R? I don't get why you and Sadoun says that the 123.0 West Longitude sat is 181 degrees. Can you give me some equation so I can figure these out then? I am on some sat now at that compass area. I don't remember any figuring on Sadouns site that talked about figuring out where the satellites are. Factoring in your longitude. I kind of want to keep it on the spot I have it now. If what I found isn't G10R then I wonder what it is? thanks JS

When you are looking directly at south from your location, you are looking at 122W. So for you G10R will be just 1 degree to the west when you are looking directly south (you also have to factor in magnetic declination).

All satellites will be south to you (they are all parked over the equator). Now imagine that they are all sitting on the ground south of you. Finding them becomes no different than navigating to any city. If you are driving to Los Angeles (longitude 118W) you dont turn your car due west so that you intersect the 118 line. Instead you head south. Due south on your compass is 180 degrees. but LA is slightly east of you at 118W. 4 degrees east of you to be exact. so you subtract 4 degrees from the compass heading and steer your car for 176 degrees south.
If that makes sense, then we can talk about magnetic declination. Then elevation. Then motors.

Also, now is time to reveal one of the more frustrating things for a beginner. Signal Strenth doesnt mean anything . I know, it makes no sense. Just use the quality meter instead. that is the true indicator of if you have anything. i note you are using a meter. what kind? In all likelyhood you are just getting noise.
