Satellite reception in Australia

I live in Australia (Brisbane) and am interested in Satellite television.

Can I use any of the equipment discussed here to pick up transponders with an Australian footprint?

And can I get any of the US broadcasts using that equipment?

I guess so, yes. You would need to see what satellites cover Australia and then see what TV channels are free-to-air and what satellites they are beamed from; then see if any of those satellites cover Australia. Check out www.lyngsat.com as a good starting point
