Signal is 78 and no quality
Well gents, its been a long road but i think im getting closer. I used a signal meter to help aquire signal. I got a 78 on amc 5 which is my south bird. However i get no quality. Naturally it cant find any channels when scanning. The whole setup in the fortec confuses me. I may not be following the steps correctly while in the fortec itself. I know im doing something wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx

read thru this thread, see if the screen shots help you setup the box.
The key is you need to stay on the "antenna setup" screen till you get some indication on the green quality indicator.
Use the up/down arrows on the remote to move thru the fields, select an active transponder on AMC5 (be on the "TP" field, and cycle thru them until the number clost to 11808 is there) then move back to the FTA field and STAY there while moving the dish around.

All the information I reference above is explained in the setup tips here:

Sort of. I couldn't get a signal for days. There was a tree in the distance blocking my view, although it looked clear to me.
I picked a different satellite, and got a signal after a while.
It is VERY touchy. You can move the LNB 1/4" and lose the signal completely. The technique is to know where to point, but as close as possible, move the dish a hair, wait about 5-10 seconds to stabalize, and observe QUALITY indicator, and nudge it again till you get a signal.

I guess i dont know the technique. I have no idea where to point. Im using a compass which dont mean the dish is gonna be pointed in the same direction. lol
I used a signal meter and got better signal 78 but not the quality i want. I guessI got to do trial in error?
Thanks for your help man!

In another thread, I see you have the roof mount.
I might suggest you try to line up your dish without the motor, see if you can get a lock on some other satellite. If you can finangle a way to get this mounted using the foot plate and the J pipe plumb, put your dish on that and try for a fixed install.
Get your compass out, find 218 degrees. That should be Telstar 5.
Set your LNB to about 4'o clock (looking at the dish, twist counter clockwise).
Set your Dish's elevation bracket number to 54.5 degrees.
Line up the dish arm to 218 and see if you can find T5.
Set your transponder (TP number) to 12084 and see what you can find.

When I set-up my system I used the following method - I took a compass and a 5' stick and walked about five or six feet in front on my dish and put the stick at the compass heading of the sat I wanted to aim at, then standing behind your dish it is easier to point your dish in the right direction. This method is not 100% accurate but will get you in the general area. Then do what the others have suggested...have a good live xponder up on your screen and make very small horizontal adjustments and wait for a few seconds before making another - always watching the signal and quality bars. The thrill you get from first seeing those bars turn green and actually seeing a quality reading WILL be worth all the frustration that you are going through now.

Signal 92 and no quality
BooHoo!
Me confused! I hooked my sat finder on the rg6 on lnb and receiver and moved dish toward 218. I locked on a full signal but didnt know what it was looking at. I tried finding telstar 5 in the sat list but could not find it.
Thought intelsat was it but i guess not. While i was in the antenna setup, I was cruising thru the sats to see where i was pointing at and noticed that 61.5 echo level was at 92. I guess I was closer to that than anything. However no quality at all! No matter what? Where is telstar in the menu and where in relation to 61.5 would telstar 5 be? I dont even know where in the arc, 61.5 is. Confused! Also remember it is very hard for me to set the lnb cause i have mounted on my patio rail and the dish is like 3 feet out over the rail. If anyone can help please do so before i jump over the rail! lol
appreciate all your help

Re: Signal 92 and no quality
T5 is at 97W. If you think you dish aims at Echo sat at 61W, you are way off the T5.
1. Use online calculator to get T5 elevation/azimuth.
2. If I were you, I would not use the sat meter since it does not indicate which sat the dish aims at, making you get more confuse. Use the receiver signal meter instead.
3. Make sure you set the skew correctly.
4. Use active transponder on T5 when tuning the dish.

Funny i set the angle at 42 and im at the top of my buildings. Thats not good and pick up nothing, At that angle signal is 78. If i turn the dish to the ground its 78. Confusing and frustrating!
And at least I get something when i use the sat meter. I havnt gotten anything so far and 2 weeks in reading all the time and spending every waking moment with it.
I think ill take a break for a while.
Back to the drawing board
Thanks

Re: Signal 92 and no quality
Signal strength is not really important. Make sure you set the LOF correctly.
What transponder on T5 did you use when tuning the dish? Make sure you pick an active one.
Give me your zipcode or you city, I will double check the dish elevation/azimuth of T5 for you.

In another thread, Tec gives his location as Miami, FL.
Thats why I gave him 218 compass, and 54.5 for EL (with no motor) to see if he could find T5.
