180CMP Fortec C/KU Band Dish

Hi everybody,
one of my Dish Network antennas is 52" x 47" aiming sat 110, with a clear view to the west. I have problems getting most of the transponders, (by the way no help from the DishNetwork guy ) - wind is also an issue. The type of antenna DishNetwork installed is really cheap (my guess), with minimal wind it shakes a lot causing signal loss, after less than 2 years all the screws are rusted and impossible to move. Here is my question/solution?:
1. buy a 180 Fortec pole mount - would it get me a better signal?
2. Can I use the legacy LNB (CalAmp 150517 -hxxp://calamp.com/pro_dbs_150517.html) with the 180 Fortec ?
3.Could I use the same tripode DN installed ? Similar to this:

(vertical pipe is ca. 2" 6/8 diameter - and construction is much solid )
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks. F

I would not put a 6 foot dish (180cm) on that mount. It's too heavy for that one.

The other issue you have is the 180cm is a prime focus dish, they do not work well with LNB's made for offset dishes.

Where are you located that you need such a big dish for Dish network?

? Do you really mean "52" x 47", or did you mean to say CMs instead of inches? Or are you one of those people in PR or something who need big dishes for the DBS sats?

I agree with what PMB1010 said, however just to add something, the reason the LNBF (not lnb) isn't well suited is that it is designed for a high F/D dish (ie the specs say 0.58 to 0.60), whereas the Fortec 180 has an F/D of .38 . Basically that LNBF would not be seeing the entire dish, just the interior. Sort of like standing next to your house with a regular camera... you can't get the whole house in the picture, but if you use a short FL wide angle lens, you can see the entire house. I used to use a DBS lnbf like that strapped on the side of the feedhorn of my 10' dish, but the reception wasn't quite as good as I got with a little 18" dish.

Thanks you guys.
Yes, I mean inches, and yes, again I'm one of those in PR who need big dishes to get signal.
So, Sadoun doesn't have offset dishes bigger that the one I already have, 180 Fortec is not an option because the inadequate LNBF and so on.

What I will do is again to try to repoint the dish, change screws with stainless ones and see how far I can go. A lot of friends here with DN have the same problem. Where can I find a footprint map of sat 110 W?
Again Pmb1010 and Wejones thanks for your explanations.

Have nice day. F

Since wind seems to be a big part of your problem, yeah, perhaps just improving the stability of the mount you are on might help. Ie you might beef up the pole your dish is mounted on, heavier guage pipe, secured in concrete. You had a picture of a roof mount, but I wasn't sure if you were now using a roof mount. You might find it more stable to mount on the ground if so. Part of the problem with going with a bigger dish, is that a bigger dish has to be aimed more accurately since it has a narrower beamwidth, and also it takes less movement from the wind to knock it off the signal, so a good solid mount is important

If all else fails, it's not out of the question to go to the Fortec 180 dish, but I'd either search for a feedhorn/lnb suited for a .38 F/D dish, or possibly try to modify a legacy lnbf. I just took a look at an old legacy DBS lnbf I have sitting here, and the reason that it is not suited for a low F/D dish is that the built in scalar rings, are funnel shaped. Ie compared to a feedhorn made for a low F/D dish, which has scalar rings that are pretty much flat like a dinner plate with groves, the DBS lnbf is like a funnel with groves, and this keep the actual focal point at the center of the funnel from seeing the outside of a low F/D dish.

If you do decide to try the 180 dish, I think that I would try grinding down or cutting off the funnel shaped scalar rings with a hack-saw, to flatten them out a bit. Those legacy lnbfs are cheap, up here in the mainland, you pretty much get them for free, so it's no big loss if you ruin it, but if you can flatten out the scalar rings, it should see the entire dish. But it would be better to keep looking for a source of lnbf that was matched to such a dish.

But if so many people have this problem, it seems like there ought to be someone selling lnbfs that are matched to bigger low F/D dishes. Ie you are more likely finding a solution by talking to people in your area who are more familiar with the issues. Those of u
