Red face Usals

When using the Fortec Star and motor set-up (SG240) do I need to use USALS as the positioner setting? Will this setting store the satellite locations in its memory?

I would definitely use USALS. If you put the appropriate lon/lat in the system and you have the correct elevation and directions set for your satellite, USALS will point you to the satellite everytime without having to store anything. Just set each satellite to use USALS and enjoy. If you chose not to use USALS, then you will have to manually locate each satellite and store its location.

To add to what Lumpkin said, USALS doesn't store any sat locations as such. Basically you tell USALS what your location is, and what sat location you want to go to, and it calculates the motor rotation angle, which will work assuming that the motor has been calibrated properly, and your setup aligned properly.

The other protocol is DiseqC-1.2 (actually USALS is just one additional command in the DiseqC-1.2 protocol). With DiseqC-1.2, the locations are stored in the motor itself. Ie you locate the sat manually, then save the location in the motor. With USALS, NOTHING is stored in the motor, except the position of due south.
