Need Help with Fiber glass BUD

I have a 7ft motorized Fiber glass BUD that I tried triaging with a friend for satellite signals. We were able to tune in satellites with signal strengths up to 85%, but were unsuccessful getting corresponding signal strengths for Quality. In fact, the Q signals did not even surface pass 0%. Someone told me this maybe due to the fact fiber glass dishes do not support KU LNBs, and suggested perhaps re-painting the dish with a supporting material. We tgried using both Universal and Dish single standard LNBs without any luck.

I am wondering if anyone here who is willing to help and share some tips on how to set the dish. I live in Rochester, MN.

Thanks in advance for your attention and help.

The fiberglass dish has metal mesh or something inside the fiberglass. No way to tell if it is Ku compatable or not, but it is probably OK, because anything relatively new will work on Ku, and anything very old would have needed to be bigger than that to get C-band. So it's likely that you just aren't aimed at the sat you're looking for. Also, you need to set up your receiver with LO freq matching your lnbf, and have to tune the receiver to an active transponder. What sat, and transponder are you trying to hit, and where did you get the "universal" lnbf, and what does it say on it relative to frequencies? What receiver? How are you moving dish, and how is receiver connected?

Thanks Bill. Your suggestions will be looked, and I share them with my friend as I have limited knowledge in FTA and LNB. My friend suggested painting the Dish with some metalic paint, becuase he thinks that might work.

Do you know what is the skew angle between Nimiq 1 and Nimig 2??

Re skew angle, I guess this means you have a fixed dish, and not a motorized one. If so, there is a fixed dish calculator at the Saduon installation page.

Re painting the dish. A metallic paint may reflect Ku, however the surface of the fibreglass won't focus the same as the internal metal surface, so the best case is that you'd need to re-adjust your focal length, and the worst case being that it won't focus at all. If, by chance, the dish is designed for C-band only, which I think is unlikely, then most people think the biggest problem is the metalic surface has holes big enough for the Ku to go through, but really, the biggest problem is the shape of the dish isn't perfect enough. Anyway, I really don't think metalic paint will help. I think it will complicate things. I also think your dish is probably OK for Ku as is, and you just weren't aiming it right.
