Cable & FTA satellite in same coax

Hi all
A newbie. I am planning to experiment FTA but would like to keep my cable currently feeding into my home. Without running a seperate coax, what do I use to combine both cable and FTA dish signal? And then split them up again to go into the receiver and the cable desk-top box. My cable supplies both TV and Internet. Appreciate if anyone can help. Thanks in advance.

How difficult would a second coax be? As I see it, there are several problems. First, anything 'extra' on a cable modem line will ruin your connection. Second, the FTA receiver is providing power to the LNB. Cable companies do not generally appreciate current being sent back up the line.

There may be an option with isolators and splitters, but someone with more experience than I would need to explain it. It would still probably be easier and cheaper to run another line.

You could use a pair of diplexers to combine the satellite and cable TV signals on one coax. This works fine for cable TV but I would not use them when you have cable Internet. Run a second coax for the FTA.

A second coax seems to be quite a task as the building where I can mount dish (with good sky visibility) is away from my home and coincidently is where the cable incoming is connected.

There are no dumb questions -- only dumb answers. Unfortunately there is no wireless LNB - if there was it would set the whole satellite industry on its ear. You really have little choice. Having said that, I have used diplexers even when the customer has cable Internet and it has worked; but I always feel a bit leary doing this. As kevision pointed out -- cable modems don't like anything extra sharing their lines. I guess you could always try a pair of dilpexers and if it screws up your Internet connection then run a second coax. From what you say there is no way to connect the diplexers after the split-off for the cable modem since the dish and cable are located at another building. If you tap into the cable TV output after it has been separated from the Internet connection (you will see a Splitter somewhere in the house separating the cable TV from the Internet -- one coax will go to your TV and another to your cable modem) then you would be OK since you could tie in the diplexer at that point. But from what you describe I think this is not an option. Well, try it and see. If you need hookup instructions for the diplexers post back and we will guide you through it.

diplexers, cool. If you end up trying this, please let us know how it goes, That would be an interesting and convienent set up.

My sat view misses most everything to the south and I have dreamt up a scheme for a remote 'receiving station' before that would utilize something like this:

It would require a water-proof container and a nearby electrical source.

There actually is a split off, one to the cable modem and the other to the cable TV. From what you described, I can install the Diplexer to the cable TV end and hopefully work, including Internet. Crossing my fingers. Will seek further help if I run into problems or diplexer Installation. Thanks a bunch!!
