| Home Ent Systems A home theater system is a combination of electronic components designed to recreate the experience of watching a movie in a theater. When you watch a movie on a home theater system, you are more immersed in the experience than when you watch one on an ordinary television. |

Time to dig that thing out of the closet. Thought I had eliminated that box. The stack is quite large

you don't get any sound. most new receivers pass ac3 so you can use a surround system to decode it.

So, if your receiver passes it you still need a surround system to decode it.. Guess I'm out of luck with my vintage NAD equipment with my TV hooked into it..
A PCI satellite card would be in order then..

Yeah. THe best sound "card" isn't a card though. I use a Soundblaster Extigy, and it works fine for AC3, and it doesn't have to be attached to a computer. The Extigy has both optical and RCA inputs.

My Lifetime and Ultra both have an RCA jack which is spdif or something like that, that plugs into a digital input on the extigy. I think the later model Fortecs have an optical output, and the extigy has an optical input. I think the Extigy has surround sound outputs, but I just use the earphone jack to my stereo, since I don't have surround sound. My only complaint is that every time there is a power failure, the volume goes to zero, and I have to reset it, however this must be a setting because I think other people have said that their extigy doesn't do that.

You say inexpensive. I'm curious where you found one for a reasonable price. When I bought mine, they were pretty costly for a soundcard. I've since wanted to get another one, and was hoping I could find one cheaper, but I can't find one at a reasonable price.
I originally bought my Extigy for another purpose, but when I got mpeg, I grabbed it to use with the mpeg receiver, but I'd like to get another for the original use.
THanks.

Bill, that popular auction site we all know and love, Hahaha... I did a search for Extigy and found a few and also checked the completed auctions some used ones went reasonable..

Thanks. I had done that a while back, and actually bid on one, but it went for almost what a new one was worth. I'll try again, thanks.
