Home Ent Systems A home theater system is a combination of electronic components designed to recreate the experience of watching a movie in a theater. When you watch a movie on a home theater system, you are more immersed in the experience than when you watch one on an ordinary television.

DVD Recorder w/ ATSC

Last night I had yard work to do, so I recorded "24" on my JVC DVD recorder. The problem, my recorder only receives NTSC over the air. I had to record "24" on analog channel 6. Channel 6 is one of the worst OTA stations anywhere because of the frequency. My TV is HD and we usually watch it on the digital HD station.

Here is my question, does anyone have any experience with an ATSC DVD recorder?

Thanks,

Thanks,
Sorry. I've never used a DVD recorder. However I have recorded ATSC via computer. Ie I have a PCI ATSC card in the computer, and can record from that to disk. But BOY, does it use up a lot of disk space. I recorded the Superbowl 2 years ago, and paused during all the commercials and halftime, and it was still like 30-40 GB! I assume that these new Blueray and HD-DVD, must really squeeze a lot of GBs on a disk. I now occasionally record 1 hour network shows in HD on my hard drive. I forget how big they are (something in the 10-15 GB range I think, but they are still way to big to fit on a standard DVD, but if you have a big enough hard drive, you can play them back via computer then delete before you fill up the drive.

I was recording and playing back ATSC HD OK via my PCI card prior to owning an HDTV, but since getting the HDTV, I've now switched my UHF antenna over to the HDTV, so now I can't record ATSC anymore until I get a new antenna. I've been recording CBS HD off satellite, but have been having a little trouble with the audio. They have 2 audio streams, one of which seems to confuse my ROKU (which is what I use to send the recordings to the HDTV). I was able to use an around about method to specify the 2nd audio channel, but then I tried only recording the 2nd channel, and that didn't work, because for some reason the audio was out of sync. Also, I accidently left the 2nd audio channel setting in there and recorded a PBS program. It worked, but I got an audio version that had voice-overs for the visually impaired (not sure I understand the utility of this), ie a voice kept coming on telling you what was on the screen, like "storm clouds looming over the lake. The main character turns and sees a car coming up the driveway..." type of thing. Kind of distracting. So I haven't been having very good luck recently.

I'm curious though, why you said that channel 6 was bad "because of the frequency"? Is something local to you interferring with that freq or something?? I've always found ch 6 to be one of the better frequencies.

24

My high def reception is so-so for FOX. I prefer to watch 24 on my FTA satellite (FOX Beaumont), digital picture but not high def even though I don't notice that big difference. Anyway, I can easily recorder stuff and burn it onto my DVD. With high def, it is scary to see all the imperfections on these characters face. BTW, did they ever figure out who was the mole in CTU this time?
