Will this work?

Hi,

I've had a Dish 500 with two receivers (510 and 301) for about a year and I am considering replacing the 301 with the Dual-tuner 921 receiver. This will be my first attempt at upgrading this system so I'd appreciate it if someone can tell me whether or not my plan will work.

I believe that I have a DishPro Twin LNB. (It has the DP logo and two cables connected to it.) I'm thinking that I can connect a DishPro Plus 44 switch to the outputs of the LNB and connect the leads that now run to each receiver to two of the outputs of the 44. At the end of the lead going to the 921 I would insert a Dishpro Plus Separator and then connect leads from that to the two inputs of the 921. Will this work?

I also am considering having Dish Network install a second dish for some of my local channels which I can not now receive (I believe that it would point to the 148 satellite.) I would think that this dish could simply be connected to one of the remaining inputs of the 44 switch.

Any flaws in this thinking? Thanks for any help you can provide!

Jim

That all looks good.. Just make sure that all the coax in your system is RG6. Duel tuners do not work with rg59.

The dpp equipment you are wanting to install is very new, expensive , and a llittle buggy. I would suggest the following.

Dish one ...DP Twin, 2 lines going to port 1 and 2 of a DP 34 switch One line coming from a second dish (the second dish can be a 500 0r a 300) with a DP Duel ( this is a skinny single eye lnb , It has to be DP.) Take that line to port 3 on the 34 switch, then run 2 lines to your 921, and a single line to your other receiver. Of course this will only work if you are able to run a second line to the 921.
The reason behind this is this is proven technology. This is how dishl will install your system . the DPP stuff shas been having software issues, they supposedly got them worked out. But there have had tons of problems with it.
Your idea will work, but I suggest you look atb the other option. See if it is feesable.

Have fun

Cableguy,

Thanks for the reply and the "heads up" about the coax and the DPP equipment. I knew that I needed RG-6, but I never considered that I might already have RG-59. I'll have to check.

My reason for considering the DPP 44 was to avoid having to run an additional line for the 921. but your suggestion is a good one. I didn't realize that the DPP equipment was "bleeding edge". That also brings up another question. Do the switches also have upgradeable software or is it just the receivers? I guess I had thought that the switches were "dumb" devices.

I guess I'm getting a little ahead of myself because I'm looking forward to being able to record a show while watching another. I think I'll go ahead and have Dish Network provide that second dish since I'm entitled to it. I'm thinking they are going to have to give me some kind of switch since my current LBN is connected directly to both receivers. I'll see what they provide and go from there.

Thanks again!

Jim

You are correct the dpp swithes are dumb devices. but the software in dish receivers gets updated through the dish periodically. Dish networks sends software updates out through the satellite about every 6 weeks or so.

I would go ahead and let Dish install the second dish beings its free. if you have all dp equipment the may go ahead and put a dp 34 or dpp 44 in.
Worst case if you have 2 existing receivers they will put 2 dp 21 switches. But you can easily sell those later on ebay and get the switch you need.

Dpp is kick ass and will save alot of headaches. The problem has been with the seperators not the dpp 44. Like I said Dish is supposed to be getting the final bugs worked out. But it is bleeding edge. The cool thing with a dpp 44 is it can run off a dp twin and can run both legacy and dp receivers.

You had me going with that statement until I searched for kick 1212.

Thanks for the clarification about the problem being the separators.

I called Dish today and they will install the second dish on 1/24. I'll see what switch(es) they give me.

Thanks again!
