Blu-Ray Vs HD DVD format war

At the CES 2007 show, there were a lot of buzz about Blu-Ray Vs HD DVD format war.

During the show I attended a presentation by the Blu-ray DVD format sponsors.

In a nutshel, the Blu-ray camp says that their format has more storage capacity ( up to 50GB per Blu-ray disc), 1.5X faster bit rate access speed, and 9 out of 10 studios adopting the format for their future DVD releases.

While walking the show, I have noticed the majority of DVD manufacturers adopting Blu-ray instead of HD DVD format.

So my guess, Blu-ray will dominate. What do you think?

I think the domination will take place per region.
In Europe, HD DVD is ahead. In fact, many of the movies you can buy only on Blu Ray here, can be bought on HD DVD over there, which is awesome, because the Europeans(and Asia) are taking advantage of the interactive menus and content, while for example here in the U.S., Universal doesn't as much as they should.

I like HD DVD because:
The very fact that i can plug the $200(or less) HD DVD drive for the XBOX360 into my PC and play HD movies is pretty sweet(first hand experience). AND Microsoft and Intel are behind HD DVD, which is why Vista 64 bit has native support for HD DVD and plays in Windows Media Player 11.

AND you can take a regular DVD, burn HD DVD compatible video to it and play it on a HD DVD player, i'm not sure if Blu Ray can do that, but it would be great if both did, seeing how blank media for either format is damn expensive.

Very strict about their standards.
In fact i heard from various podcasts that the LG Dual format player(BH100) actually doesn't have the official backing of HD DVD

LG Electronics stated today that LG's multiformat player will not support hd dvd advanced menu interactivity.The BH100 also offers no support for the persistent memory features required for hd-dvd certification.Many of you may have noticed the non official hd-dvd logo.Another standard required for hd-dvd certification is networking..which is non existent in the BF100.Basically any interactive features available on an hd-dvd disc will not be supported...Many who have seen the player claim the hd-dvd appears to be "slapped on" as an afterthought.

I like Blu Ray because:
Huge sizes, but it doesn't really matter how much either hold if we never see them here in the U.S., and NO, neither format actually fills the disk as much as they should.

REWRITABLE! Early Blu Ray discs were rewritable, and for the most part still are (unless it's the BDROM version of course, which is what our movies come on). I would find that very useful using it as temporary storage and backup.

But in the end i don't care who wins, I JUST WANT MY HD CONTENT!

It's going to be a matter of preferancefromwhat I understand. They have a new DVD with the capacity to put both formats on the same disk so I'm sure it will come down to what the consumer desires. However, My notebook hooked up to my HDTV through the PC port gives 1080P on any disk I play. Plus it has SPDIF out as well so I'm already there with the notebook. In time I look for the computer and TV to be so intergrated that components such as computers, audio components, DVD, VCR, all be just cards that are put in the central home AV center perhaps feeding the screens that are installed in each room and fed by it. Perhaps even fed to a single wall painted with that LCD paint where the hole wall is your screen. just think gamers, all 4 walls as one screen, true 3D and interactive like the peripherals that nintendo came out with for WII.

the really big question is, is 1080P just a beggining? where will it really go from here?

All your notebook is doing is upscaling it to 1080p, there is really no comparison between that and true 1080p source that can be downloaded from newsgroups or watching it from BluRay/HD DVD.
DVD players can do that. Which is great, because it's nice to get all you can from your computers. And playing games at HD resolutions is awesome as well, Battlefield 2142 anyone?

and 1080p is just another stepping stone of course.
At CES i believe Sharp was showing off a 5megapixel hdtv or something like that. There gonna keep pumping out the rez to milk us of our money.

I just watched Flyboys on it tonight and it was far superior than the 1080I upconversion DVD player. In fact it was right there with the demo of HD DVD that was showing at circuit city when I bought it. for me that will do for now, until one or the other dominates and the prices fall after they become standard. I'm sure that pumping us out of our money is true. technology hasn't peaked yet, I look for mind blowing advances over the horizon because its really just getting good and started right now

Flyboys is coming out on BluRay. Or did you mean some general HD DVD demo of some random stuff?
If you saw a hd dvd demo with Flyboys, then yeah, it would just be the dvd upconverted, in that case not much of a demo. MGM is blu ray only at the moment.

what I did was watch the DVD through the notebook with the PC hook up for the TV and the SPDIF going to the home theater receiver. the DVD might not be blu ray or HD DVD but it was upscaled to 1080P. it was far better believe it or not than the 1080I upconversion DVD player I have. I just stumbled on this little trick reading through the manual of the TV on a bored sleeples night. like I said, I'll go with one or the other eventually when the prices come down and they take to be the standard. right now I own 400+ movies, I'm hoping the they sooner or later make a DVD player to go 1080P or bettter. dont get me wrong, the upconversion to 1080I isn't bad by any means but it lookes alot better through the notebook feeding the TV @ 1920 x 1080.

I'm thinking HD DVD has a fighting chance to come out as the winner, especially with the recent announcements that 3xDVD is being made available via the HD DVD spec. That means 3x DVD capacity on the same old cheap DVDs. Sounds like a winner to me!

BD does and will dominate the "market".
During the next couple of months, "hybrid" devices will appear and then those devices will dominate the market as we have already seen that going on with DVD-R vs. DVD+R.

Clearly Blue-Ray appears to be dominating. I am not sure what Freq. bandwith the HD-DVD uses but Blue-Ray (Ultraviolet) has the greatest potential for storage and quality.

Yeah, I hope Blue-Ray wins, since it clearly has a larger storage area over HD. The more storage, the better. heh... is it something like 50GB max for Blue-Ray vs 35GB max for HD?

got a new 58" 1080p monitor and needed an HD dvd... bought an HD DVD not Blu-Ray... didn't research much, just grabbed the first I saw!

Hopefully this won't happen: HD DVD=BETA VCR

Combodevices is the only suitable path to go.
BD or HDDVD will not disappear just suddenly...

The big biz should watch out for VMD!

HD-DVD for prerecorded movies is done in the USA with most of the major movie studios giving up on the format. I can see microsoft(who never wants to admit making a mistake) trying to save face and promoting the format for pc data storage. Another Betamax vs VHS where the consumer is the real loser. Hopefully maybe a deal can be made, where all future BluRay players have HD-DVD support built in.

Judging from CES 2008 Blu Ray and HD DVD exhibits, it seems that Blu Ray is the winner. They had a huge main exhibit and mini exhibits around.

Sony and other Blu Ray advocates where pushing the standard well. Prices are going down on Blu Ray DVD movies. So that ought to help push Blu Ray DVD players and Recorders higher. BTW, Blu-ray is incorporated within Sony’s PlayStation 3 console. XBox 360 uses HD DVD.

Hitachi had one of the 1st Mini HDTV camcorders that records directly in Blu Ray format on an internal 40GB HD drive.

The 1st time I used a Hitachi camcorder was in 1980. It was a brand new shoulder Camera with a VHS tape recorder/player that you carry in a bag on your shoulder. Even then the picture was awesome with that camera. I video taped a lot of family events and family weddings with it. At that time, only a few people had a VHS camcorder.

We bought ours from the electronics market at Tokyo, Japan back then.
