I just got a 52" Panasonic LCD on black Friday from Circuit City. I ordered it online and they delivered it to the house a week later. When I called to schedule delivery they ask if I had an old tv to have them take. I said yes and they hauled away my old 27" tube tv for free.

Since I posted (last Jan) about the problem of getting rid of old TVs and monitors, my (very small) town put me in charge of finding a place to dispose of such things. I called around, and the going rate for a full size TV was $25, for businesses, however I called one place and they said that for residential TVs, that it was FREE! Apparently our state (Maine) forces manufacturers to pay for recycling such things, so they just bill the manufacturer. Haven't tried it yet, and the place that said it is free still has a $25 fee listed. But hopefully, if this trend continues into other states, it may no longer be a problem to dispose of TVs and monitors.
Also, since posting in Jan, I've finally bought an HDTV. I got an LCD. We went and looked at the various types, and there wasn't a whole lot of difference in picture quality that we could see, at least with the canned video they were displaying, however there was one HUGE difference, and that is reflection of light from windows and lights, etc. We have so many windows in our house, that it's almost impossible to see the screen of any TV with a shiny glass surface, but the LCDs almost completely eliminate the glare from window and light reflection. It's amazing.
Thats what I am thinking of going with the next time around LCD.![]()
One aspect of plasma that has not been mentioned is viewing angle. LCD lose brightness when viewed from an angle, plasma does not. My room is long and narrow and I have my plasma on the long with with chairs at angles of at least 45 degrees or greater. No picture degradation at all.
I have a 42" Hitachi plasma and my wife even likes it.

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here.
I agree with wejones that CRT picture quality can't be beat yet.
But, mreaves53, I've seen some new LCD sets that do not lose their brightness from most angles. I believe that Samsung is the most popular in Korea, and that Hitachi is still at the top in Japan. These are totally non-scientific findings on my part based on asking actual people who live in those countries.
As of now, I like the new Sharp Aquos line of LCD tvs. There is a marked difference in picture quality when viewed side-by-side with other sets. They're pretty pricey though, so I can't afford one.
Just one other point. LCD has the lowest electrical consumption, while plasma is an energy hog. This may sway your purchasing decision if energy costs are high in your area.
By the way, I still have my old Sanyo 19" and it still suits my purpose.![]()
I brought the Sharp Aquos 1080i in January, shortly the discontinued it and switched to 1080p. I very much enjoy this TV. To be honest, at 20 away, I don't anyone can tell the difference between any of high def screens. In my opinion, the quality of the feed is much more important. The way I looked at, sooner or later you will have to get a new TV when they turn off the analog OTA signals. And since they are already broadcasting 20 some channels already in digital in my area, I would rather get a new TV sooner. My biggest issue is reliablity, why spend thousands if it won't stand the test of time. During my research, I spent some time reading other peoples reviews, even top brand names TV have problems, and they have no qualms telling what the problems are. So I have no problem paying more for quality.
My old 27 in RCA which is still working after 18 years old is now in the guest bedroom
