Great little topic.
And Nice work--thank you for sharing- for me this makes perfect sense though.

I presently use my DirecTV OTA input for off-air antenna channels. I'm just wondering if I were to use a general digital OTA tuner rather than the DirecTV OTA tuner built into my DirecTV satellite receiver if I were to receive more off air channels via my rooftop TV antenna? Does the DirecTV OTA tuner on their satellite box restrict some OTA channels from being picked up when scanned because of market area restriction via the DirecTV satellite receiver? Would a general digital OTA receiver pull in more channels when scanning?

To the best of my knowledge if you scan the DirectTV receiver with a regular outside TV antenna connected to the antenna jack you get everything available in your area for free.
The locals you get thru DirecTV are rebroadcasts of the OTA signals and they don't give you everything.![]()
I didn't know about using the Directv tuner for that. I purchased an outdoor antenna since my rabbit ears didn't work indoors, even with some of the best on the market in hand. I purchased the HDTV outdoor antenna sold by Sadoun and put it up and it is connected to my Coverter box and it works great with my Analog TV. I now watch the local channels which is very clear and the picture is better than the one I receive on my new flat panel TV connected to Direct.
Yes, it will work great with a converter box. It also works great with off-air high definition signals if your television is high definition capable. An off-air high definition signal is just about the best picture signal you can get. It definitely is the way to go. Glad you're enjoying it!
