    Say goodbye to analog

The nation is going digital on June 12. Because you already enjoy 100% digital programming from DIRECTV, Dish Network, or FTA satellites, you don't need to worry about a thing. If you still have questions about the Digital Transition, you can post it here.

Seems many of the local channels in digital will contine to broadcast in UHF, which generally, has a shorter signal distance, so it'll require a larger antenna or basically harder to get than when they are broadcasting in VHF. That's a shame... Would have liked to have them kept their VHF frequencies. Oh well.

    digital Off-air help

Generally the new digital off-air broadcasting channels will have better range and quality. If you need to determine what kind of antenna you need you can go to Antennaweb.Org. , put in your zip code and it will give you the data for your area.

Generally, I've read news reports that digital signals have a lesser range than analog signals, so to compensate, TV signals boost their signal strength to make up the difference.. somewhat...

In either case, I find that antennaweb.org is not very accurate... For example, I enter my exact location and it tells me I have about 3 stations I can pick up... but in reality I can pick up like 10 stations... I find tvfool.com is much more reliable.

    Off-Air antenna calculator

That is correct. A lot of stations are now broadcasting with 1000kW to get the range from before. There is a great Antenna assistance website for calculating what kind of off-air antenna you need. Go to:

    Ota

What's fun about OTA digital is that I can get stations that I was not able to before. Early in the morning I can scan about 12 additional stations that I would not normally get. By the time the sun comes up there gone. This is no doubt related to certain conditions.

how to get allot of local hd channels

to pick up local hd stations if you have a set of rabbit ears; with the ears flattened out horz. and hook up one of those 300 ohm-75 ohm adaptors and hook it to your atsc on your receiver and scan low med & high.if you really want a good set up put the rabbit ears on the focal point of a large c-band dish and get more local channels 100 plus miles away. but also remember, all hd local waves are sent out horz! just two wires flatten out about 9 inches long and hooked to a 300-ohm,75-ohm adaptor. if you have no dish put antenna up two feet higher than your house. two beer cans with the tabs hooked to the 300-ohm-75-ohm adaptor with the cans laying down sideways and not touching ,horz, two foot higher than your house on a pole works better than any store antenna!
