Can't Make A Decision
After weeks of searching all the details on buying and installing a FTA system, I still have doubts why I should spend the cash to watch a few FTA channels. So, let me begin... From what I can find, there aren't that many "real" great free to air channels to watch for the money. I know! I know!, some/many here will disagree with me on this, but, I'm not into spending my time watching crazy, religious, etc stuff just to claim I have a FTA system. That is, unless I'm not getting all the information that's available on free tv. Sure, I would love to have the FTA installed, and just see what's there to view, but, is it worth the money?
Since I have a DSR922 c-band with digital input, and subscribe to some of the main channels that most individuals would watch everyday, there's no gain to watch something not worthwhile, like those 300 music channels...such as you have to pay for with Dish Network.
The only FTA channel that would be of interest...The Outdoor Channel, The Patient Channel, and a couple more.
Does anyone have a better idea?

A very valid question
You raise good points all around, and it's a matter of what's important to you. Speaking for myself, getting Al Jazeera, Montana PBS, PBS, Create Channel, Research Channel, and UWTV was enough justification for me. The system paid for itself fast, I don't waste time surfing channels, and I get quality broadcasting.
I have a Ku band setup and am hoping to upgrade to C/Ku in the summer. If you already have the dish, you can get way more than I do.
So, what's it worth to you? Pay someone else too much for a lot, or pay a little for a little (that you want to see).
If you already have the dish, you already have the bulk of the investment. You'll have to change your dish controller to work with an FTA DBS receiver, but it's not a lot.
Well, surf Lyngsat, compare a year of DN to running your own solution, and then do what you want. Isn't it nice to live in a country where you have a choice and don't have to license your dish? Had to put that in.

If you like the outdoor channel you would love the sportsman channel all hunting all fishing all the time and the retro channels are great for the older shows that you can't get anymore and then there are the wild feeds for breaking news and sports unedited so for my taste there is a lot to watch and to see other cultures is great. and since you already have a DSR922 all you would need to do is slave a FTA receiver off of your exsitence system a small investment for all of the other options you could see.

Thanks for the info, rainman... I've heard about the Sportsman channel, howwever, didn't know where it was located. I see it is on Echostar 9/Galaxy 23 at 123.0 (w) I have Galaxy 10R mapped on the 922 at 123.0 (w). If so, this has to be a Ku band satellite, and why can't I pull it in with the DSR922. Or, is it with a DVB receiver only?

I don't have a Galaxy 23 listed on DSR922 channel chart. It has to be between Galaxy 10R (GO) 123.0 (W), and Echostar 13/Inlelsat13 (T7) 121.0 (W) on the chart. Is this correct?

Rainman, you seem to have a greater knowledge on all this C-band, Ku-band satellite stuff. So, here is my decision maker. Should I buy a motorized 36" or 39" dish from Sadoun, and with the correct LNB, and MPEG-2 DVB FTA receiver. Will I be able to get satellites...Galaxy 10R which has the "Outdoor Channel", and G23 (the old T7 label) with "The Sportsman Channel on this smaller dish, other than my 10' BUD?
I know I can buy a MPEG-2 DVB receiver and slave it to my DSR922. But, there's a small problem. The wife may have the DSR922 set on G5 satellite, and I may want to see the Sportsman channel on G23... With that, we all can see to gets control of the remote control, and a flip of the coin to see who watches what.
So, will this work...buy a 36" or 39" motorized dish. Get a C/Ku-band LNB that will work so I can receive all digital C-band and Ku band satellites on the MPEG-2 DVB FTA receiver. Can this work?
Is the Fortec Star Mercury II one in same as a MPEG-2 DVB receiver?

unfortunately that won't work as you will need a big dish to receive the sportsman channel and the outdoor channels as they are both on c band.
so I guest it's a flip of the coin for the remote.
