Lifetime:Help with editing software

I'm using a Fortec Lifetime receiver. I wanted to use the editing software obtained from the Fortec site. There is no help file with the software, so I'd appreciate some help from anyone who has used it.
I've loaded the software on the computer, but I have not yet tried to connect the Lifetime receiver yet, until I understand what is going to happen. I ran the program, and was looking for a menu item to download data from the receiver. I went into the "Tools/STB-Connect" tab, which gives a window with the serial parameters, and buttons for download and upload, but the download button is grayed out, which I don't understand.
I assume that the way to use this software would be to connect to the receiver and download the data on the receiver, then edit this data and then upload it back to the receiver. Am I correct, or perhaps this software uses the opposite interpretation of download vs upload? Ie do they intend the "upload" button to be from receiver to computer, and once uploaded, then the download button is no longer grayed out??? Or perhaps the download button is activated only when the receiver is connected???
Anyway, I'm really confused here with respect to how to use this software. Could someone who has used it give a quick summary of how it is used? Thanks.

I received a partial answer to my question in another forum, but it generated even more questions.
I found out that in the Lifetime editing software, that "upload" means "download", and visa versa. Ie, to download from the receiver, I needed to hit upload. I thought this might be the case, but was afraid to try.
Anyway, I sucessfully downloaded data from the receiver, and have started working with the data. Haven't edited it and/or uploaded yet, but that shouldn't be a problem.
The additional questions that materialized, are that first, the list of channels for some reason has multiple duplicate entries for some reason. The person who helped me get started warned me that this would happen. He didn't have any solution for the problem, and I couldn't figure out anything either. I can't see any obvious reason why this is happening. In one case, a whole group of channels from one transponder also shows up on another transponder, and shows up on the list for that sat twice. In other cases, they show up only once in the transponder list, but show up twice in the satellite list. It is very strange. I'm going to try using the sort channels function on the receiver prior to downloading, in hopes that this is somehow caused by the fact that my satellites and transponders were not saved in order.
The second problem I ran into, is that out of some 300 channels I have saved, at least 5 of them did not download (ch 271-275 I think, if that matters). Only thing different about these 5 channels is that when I first tried to save them, I had a poor signal, and they would not scan in, so I used the advanced scan function, entering the PIDs of one of these channels manually. Later, when I had better reception (leaves fell from trees), I sucessfully scanned in the 5 channels using the transponder scan, and they saved at a different channel number. When I download from the receiver, only the one channel that had the manual entry shows up in the editing program. This is also very strange. I am going to try to delete the manual PID entry before downloading, in hope that it will allow the other entries to download.
I'm just curious if anyone has experienced these or other irregularities in using the editing program for the Lifetime, and/or has any comments on the above.
Thanks.

illgetit is on a distinguished road
When I upload the channel data from the Lifetime it is in .BIN format.
When/where is it converted to the .GTD format that the Lifetime editor requires?

UPDATE: Nevermind, my problem is I'm running it under win98 and I don't see the upload/download option because I don't see the menu bar.
