Fortec Star Platinum NA

Hi you all,

I 've had this receiver for almost a year now and and I'm still wondering about the reading of signal strength. Let me give you an example, Sat Nahuel 1 at 71.8 W has a few frequencies that some of can pick up. Normally the signal strength varies between 20 and 56. Under normal circumstance I would not have a prayer in hell to get any kind of reception when the signal is 20 or below but I do. Now when I'm scanning the North America Sat's and I don't get above 40 I get no reception. Is this because my unit is not working properly or is it something else?

Jose

I have noticed this also on some sats. What I believe is going on is the FEC. The higher the FEC the less signal strength required. So a 7/8 will require a tight dish locked on very well as a 1/2 would not. I think if you look at the FEC on the tp's in question you might find this to be the culprit

What this means is 7 out of every 8 packets of data are actual data and the last 1 is for error correction. With a 1/2 (extreme example) you would have 1 packet of data and 1 packet for error correction in every 2 sent. Since the error correction is so much higher with the 1/2 I woudl think not near as high a signal strength would be required to achieve watchable signal.

I know I can get the networks on G4 (G16) C-Band with a 15 lock (30 is threshold) but the Equity channels on G3 C-Band I need at least a 60 for stability
