Questions about Telstar 5 and the Fortec 786v3

I had resounding success the first time I powered up the system. It was far more difficult to set up a DishTV dish.

I've been gleefully nosing around Telstar 5 and I have some questions.

I sort by Free, and see F and S, I'm assuming Free and Scrambled.
Some of the free channels show Bad Signal even with 80+ percent green bar. Some just show nothing. I'm assuming that if it doesn't say Bad Signal or Scrambled that it's a channel that's just transmitting a bunch of nothing?

I'm going to list channels I have questions on, anyone that has a fully working rig if you could give some insight into Telstar 5 that would be great.

Channel 1 through 5. Unnamed, but showing 88 percent green, and Bag Signal. Nothing here?

Channel 13 Rang A Rang. Shows the Channel name but nothing comes across, shows Bad Signal.

15 - anything here?

16 Assyria Sat. Sometimes this works fully, sometimes it's scrambled like the data isn't coming through. Showing 86 percent green.

18 TV Romania. Sometimes this works sometimes it doesn't.

19 Quatar TV - shows free but nothing shows up.

20 NBN - something supposed to be here?

32 Iraq TV - is the ground station out? I'd like to see this one, but it's black.

45 NVC
47
48 - getting some voice and flicker, but it comes on and off. 85 percent green.

56-64 - Some Japanese channels - show up flawlessly.

74 - IP Service. Anyone know anything about this?

77 Dassault. Shows Bad Signal sometimes, comes through sometimes. 85 percent green

79
80 - HUMAX DOWNLOAD. WTF is this?

97 - Israeli TV - I'd like to see this too, but nothing comes across. 88 percent green

103 Kuwait - gets a few frames, then freezes, starts again, freezes. No sound.

Are the channels that are having problems a result of me half-assing my dish install? everything shows up 80+ percent green signal. So I need to do some more tweaking physically or change something in the deck?

---
Edit.

I've been looking over
http://www.lyngsat.com/t5.shtml

I'm not seeing HALF this stuff. Does the Auto Scan enumerate everything off the different transponders? Am I supposed to change transponders manually? Like the Fox feeds, AFN, ABC's feeds, etc.

From what I understand, you have to have either a combo LNB on the dish, or a Ku LNB stuck next to your C-band LNB. That and some way to position the dish, and the appropriate receiver, and you're good to go.

If you don't have a C/Ku feedhorn, you need to buy one and a Ku LNB. Try Ebay.

I use splitters to split the LNBs between my analog receiver and a switch to send them to the Fortec. There was some signal loss going through the splitter, and I added an inline amp to the Ku line.
Some fine tufing of the antenna was required to recieve Ku.

Zeus, most likely you still haven't got a bullseye on T5. Do this: Monitor a good TP on T5, and when you peak the signal there, MAKE SURE the other TPs have close to or equal signal and quality. Just make very small adjustments especially to the LNB and you will get it, be sure to keep informing us.

Actually it was rain fade! I haven't played with satellite stuff in so long I forgot to look out my window. There was a huge rain-laden cloud right over me. When it went away everything was good. Just yesterday the sky was 100 percent clear and I got every single channel that was FTA.

Tonight - motor install!

Installing the Motor

Ok, this weekend is perfect. Clear sky, not a cloud even thinking about popping up.

I took down the dish and put on the new mount, screwed it all together, and put it back up. Put the receiver on telstar 5 again, punched in my lat/long in the Positioner section (which was new to me) and manouvered the dish until I got 80+ signal and 80+ quality. Fooled with the elevation on the new mount a little, but the page here to check all the math for the degrees was pretty dead on. With all the number for Kansas City KS it showed 5.72 degrees elevation. I set the STAB120HH's mount screw to my latitude, 39. I get Telstar 5 good.

Whenever I rotate the mount to anything else, I get good signal strength but zero quality. I can't get antyhing except T5. When I bring up the menu and select something VERY close like Telstar 6, and rotate the dish to it, the quality goes to zero again. If I change back to Telstar 5 without even rotating the dish, I get full quality again.

What's going on? Is my mount set to the wrong elevation? The book says to set the mount to your true elevation, and put the dish mount to the Dish Elevation = P - (60 - Latitude) elevation. In my case the Stab is set to 39 degrees and the sat dish set to 5-6 degrees (5.72).

Any hints welcome!

Did you align the "zero" mark on the motor to true south? If not, the dish will not track the arc properly as it moves east or west.

You set the dish elevation to the wrong angle It should be 24.5*

Very good, I will check those things when I can get back to it.

I have the dish mounting bracket set to the zero mark of the rotor as well as I can tell, but there is no zero mark on the mounting bracket, so I have to just eyeball the dish to zero it out.. may be off a few degrees.

Sadoun when you say Dish Elevation do you mean on the stab motor, or the other mount on the dish itself.

DISH ELEVATION: That is on the Dish itself
Motor Elevation: That is on the HH Motor and it equals to Latitude value

That's how I did it - just eyeballed it - and it was bang on !!! Amazingly enough

I guess it was just a combination of beginner's luck and sadoun's thorough instructions

Outstanding, that is what I am doing wrong. The stab motor is set to true lattitude, 39 sometthing. The dish elevation I set to what I thought was the correct subtraction of P, and came up with something like 5 degrees. Wondered why the dish was pointed so low - amazed that I can get T5 at all, but it's so clear I was confused about the rest. I'll give it a shot this weekend, thanks all.
