I agree with both the above, but really recommend getting the channel editor program to do the job. If you haven't cleaned out the memory on that receiver for a year, you are certainly over the limit, and it could take you all day doing it one sat at a time. I forget the exact numbers, but I think the maximum number of transponders is something like 1300, and the thing comes pre programmed with something way to close to that, meaning that after you've done a few power scans you are over the limit, and things start to get scrambled in the channel memory.
If you get the channel editor computer program, you can delete unused transponders very quickly, and keep the ones you need. There is no sense getting a stock channel list put back in, because it will have all sorts of sats and transponders you don't need, meaning it will be a short time before you're over the limit again. I had mine for about a year and started having the problem, and checked, and I had something like 1500 transponders stored, even after I had gone through and manually deleted a bunch of un-used transponders, and I don't really use my Ultra that much. No need to send it back, as long as you have a computer with either Windows XP or Win2000 OS. The program almost works with Win98, but not perfectly. I was able to get mine to upload to the computer fine from Win98, but it gave me problems downloading, and I got scrambled channel data, so I had to switch to another computer with Win2000, and then got a good download.
HOWEVER, make sure you get the right program, as the different receivers have different programs. Go to:
http://www.fortecstar.com/downloads/
and go into the pull down menu for the Ultra, which will lead you to
http://www.fortecstar.com/downloads/...roducts=65%2C1
and get the STB editor program. Ie make sure you don't get the one for
the regular Lifetime or one of the others. Even after you download and run the editor, I think you have to choose between two memory versions, ie one with 2000TV/1000RAD or 2001TV/999RAD (I think). I'm pretty sure (someone please correct if wrong) that it is the 2001/999 option which is correct for an ultra with newest firmware, but I'm not sure if this is correct for an ultra with the original firmware.
The first thing you should do, is "UPLOAD" the channel data on the receiver to the computer, and along with a big list of all your sats/transponders/channels, down at the bottom left it will give you the count of transponders. I'll guess that you are like I was, ie 1500/1300 , ie that you are OVER the maximum number of TPs.
Don't worry about hurting the receiver using the Channel editor, which is called GTools.
Sadoun and Fortec have all sorts of warnings about the dangers of uploading firmware, even though it is recommended to update that too eventually, however there shouldn't be any danger in using the channel editor, because worst case is that you just lose your channel data. If you ever do decide to try to Update the firmware using the Uploader program found on the same web site, I'd highly recommend experimenting first with the channel editor first, as it will assure that you are using the right cable, etc, without endangering your receiver. And also, when using the channel editor, first experiment with uploading from receiver to computer before doing a download TO the receiver.
And as the above posts suggest, it IS best to leave one transponder in each satellite listed. I deleted them all on a couple sats, and while it didn't hurt anything, it made it a little harder for me to get to that satellite later. I think I had to go in and enter a fake transponder to be able to choose that sat in some menus.
