newbie need help

Dear experts,

I got the signal before, and everything was fine. (IA5- watching Chinese channels) Then we had a storm and I can't get a signal anymore. The level doesn't go above 20% anymore - (it does bump up to 35% once in awhile for 5 seconds, then it comes back down). I need some help -

35.98N -83.97W

Thanks

more info

I have moved the receiver slightly all over God's creation and still can't get a signal constantly above 20%. On the initial install, I easly got over 70%. The only slight challange was quality. I had to tweak that a little. The satellite receiver is grounded. I used the old direct tv hook up.

Do you think the lnb has malfunctioned? yikes

If there was lightning during the storm then yes, I would agree with you that the LNB could have taken a hit. Try changing it with a new one.

Also, have you tried unplugging your receiver for a while then trying it again? I've had receivers seem to give no signal, but if you unplug it for a while they often come back to life.
LNBs can be zapped by lightning, but it isn't as common as you would think. I've been through some pretty nasty lightning storms, and only had an lnb go out due to lightning once in approximately 18 years in the hobby. But yes, it can happen. But the lnb is pretty much protected by it's case, and if it does get zapped, the surge most likely came up through the coax from the receiver, in which case the receiver may have suffered too.
Do you have one of those hand held signal meters? Sometimes the receiver takes a hit, and doesn't send power to the lnb, but you can test this by using one of those hand held signal meters, because if it doesn't give any response at all, you probably don't have power on. Or, even a voltmeter on the coax.
Also, are you by chance using a diseqc switch? Those are relatively prone to getting zapped.

Most likely your LNBF is bad. Also, check your cable and F-connectors

For future protection, make sure both the DISH and coaxial cable are will grounded. Also, add a surge protector to the power jack that you connect the receiver to.

Read here about grounding your system: http://www.sadoun.com/Sat/Installation/Grounding.htm

How about elevation (up and down)? Get your dish to where it gives you 20% and try changing the elevation. Move the dish little up or little down and see...

i got the new LNB

I have moved it up and down to tweak the elevation. The signal still bounces around like a psychotic crack head - 20% - 90%. I think it is the receiver. Darn it.
